(More customer reviews)I just finished building this model with my 4 year old son. By no means is this a good "solo build" for such a young kid. I think the recommended age (7-12) is spot on for solo building. This one was fun to build together though. We have not tried the two alternative models yet, but they look great. The "Creator" series are the closest to the origional format of legos. Good kits, with lots of rebuilding potential. The lighted brick in this kit is a fun addition. Other than that there are really only a few pieces that are not "standard" and the assortment looks good for future builds (eventually this will end up in our tub of bricks). Overall a decent value.
I avoid the theme series (star wars, toy story, etc.). As cool as these look, they seem to have lost the lego spirit, and are generally less for the money and less adaptable to your own designs. The few we get as gifts seem to end up the least fun in the long run. I recommend starting young ones with the basic "big old bucket of bricks", moving to the Creator series and ending up with Technics and NXT. Avoid Duplo and any "theme" sets.
