(More customer reviews)Any kid who has seen the Star Wars: Episode II movie has envied the flying gunships that descended upon the scene toward the climax scene. Very large and loaded with weapons and a few gadgets, I bought this ship the day after I heard of its availability.
For fun, this thing takes the cake. And it takes it with four firing missile weapons, two 'chin guns' and its primary armanent, two huge rocket launchers on the top near the wing joings. These don't have much range, but can get distance if you arch them. As for the rotating chin launchers they have quite the range in contrast, especially considering how small the connecting section of the projectile is. (I believe that these were lasers in the movie, but it never hurts to kill two birds with one stone.) There is also a positionable turret on the back, two bubble-like double turrets on the wingtips that click when rotated, and twelve bomb-like missiles that attack onto the undersides of the wings and the inside of the walls.
This toy is also incredible for its other features, too. There are two grappling hooks on the back either to tow vehicles or for figures to latch onto. (Some have said that they don't store well, but this isn't true: wind the string around the hook, then press it into the indentation on the outside of the hook.) There are also storage compartments under the wings, useful for transporting weapons and lightsabers as well as figures. The cockpit snugly fits two figures to pilot. Inside the open cabin the floor has surprisingly strong pegs that fit holes in the figures' feet - I can turn the entire ship UPSIDE-DOWN and not have a single one fall. The floorpiece can also be detached via a tab on the underside for quick figure deployment - or an unfortunate accident great for those elaborate games. One of the best features is the doors: by pressing a button on top the two side walls open like doors, slowly (but not too slowly) and smoothly. You can't help but imagine a sci-fi hydraulic sound. There is also a convenient and well-placed handle on top.
To complete the figure you can enhance it by add-ons that come with figures. The Clone Trooper Pilot comes with a freestanding firing spherical turret, but with a simple folding of the stand you can attach it onto pegs near the front of the inside (on the divider pillar just behind the cockpit), recreating those turrets on the movie figure. Also a great feature is putting a Clone Trooper speeder bike, and storing it in the back of the craft. Once you have purchased these your Republic Gunship is a complete and perfect war machine.
As for educational value this is more for entertainment value, but it could help instruct about troop carriers in terrestrial wars.
This ship is big, two feet length and wingspan, and I don't think it likely to break anytime soon. This is built to last.
All in all, a great toy, with a few loose components but still a must-have.
