New York City Transit Authority R27 Subway 2-Pack Review

New York City Transit Authority R27 Subway 2-Pack

I have received several E Mails in the past asking me about this set and many people wanted to know that if they bought 2 of these 2 car sets and joined them together would they make up one R-27 4 car set? The answer to this is NO! Of course the most obvious reason is that this set is non-powered meaning that there is no motorized unit in the set to pull the train, but there are even more reasons as to why this set is NOT ABLE to function as an independent train.
This 2 car set was specifically designed to work with the original Lionel 4 car R-27 subway set, Catalog No. 6-3175. The 4 car set has an embedded digital electronic control system that can set up the doors to open on the platform side when the train enters a station, control PA system announcements for each station on the line as well as the interior lighting. The 2 car add on set cited in this review plugs into the 4 car set between cars 3 and 4 to make up a 6 car train so that all digitally controlled operating functions work in unison across the entire set once they mated through special electrical connectors at the ends of the cars.
Unless the 2 car add on set is added to the 4 car set it can only be used as a dead static model suitable for display on the shelf or the cars can be towed around the layout by another locomotive or powered unit if you want to see them moving around. Nevertheless the units in this 2 car set are just as exquisitely detailed both inside and out as the cars in the 4 car set. They are beautiful to look at and a delight to behold because of all the detail they contain. I rode these subways when I was a child and Lionel has captured my memory of these cars perfectly in 3D. They are still a worthwhile buy.

Lionel Harry Potter Hogwarts Express O-Gauge Set Review

Lionel Harry Potter Hogwarts Express O-Gauge Set

I liked this set so well, I bought a second one. If you're modelling Hogs Meade, or platform 9 3/4, from the Harry Potter series, this is a "must have" addition for your O-gauge layout. The tightest curves that the train will negotiate are O-36, so if your layout is based on O-31 or O-27 curves, you will be disappointed. Lionel includes an O-36 based oval as part of the set. My layout is based on O-42 and larger curves, and I haven't had any problems.
The locomotive, tender, and cars are nicely detailed, and well built for this price point. As with any nicely detailed train components, it is necessary to exercise care when handling.
The locomotive is not ready for digital control or for digital sound effects. It has a working smoke unit and an air driven whistle. Lionel could add sound by offering an appropriately equipped car, as they have done with their Polar Express O-gauge train. I hope they do.
If you're looking for a modestly priced train set as a starter for elementary school age children, you might be better off getting one of the bulletproof nondescript freight sets (Pennsy, NYC, Santa Fe, etc). If you would like an authentically detailed collectible based on the Harry Potter stories, either to run on a suitable layout, for display, or just for collecting, this set will fill the bill very nicely.

I bought this train for myself when it first came out and since then it has seen better days. So, I have bought this new train for my son to begin the adventures of model railroading and Harry Potter books and films. He enjoys it a lot and plays with it at least once a day. He is six. This seller went above and beyond to ensure that the package arrived safe and sound. Thanks!
