LEGO Creator Log Cabin 5766 Review

Lego's Creator line is one of my favorite because the sets avoid the use of really specialized pieces and, instead, focus on the creative use of more basic pieces. This is much closer to the way Lego sets were when I grew up. You can, of course, buy the bulk Lego sets, but I find those boxes provide too many 2x4 bricks and not enough of the one-stud wide bricks and other key elements (like angled roof pieces). Creator sets like this one provide a great mix of very useful pieces, often in colors that are hard to find. And because these come with directions for multiple builds, they encourage rebuilding and experimentation.
This year's first Creator house is a tidy little log cabin (there is another house, #5771 Hillside House, arriving later in the year, as well as a lighthouse island, #5770). This one is on the small side and it is not built on a baseplate but on a number of small plates (this represents a bit of shrinkage compared to years past). But it has a great color scheme, especially the dark roof tiles, and it has plenty of windows. There is a fireplace, one mini-figure, an ingenious kayak, a tree, and a fire pit with a spit. The top lifts off and the back side (of the A-model) opens up like a giant door; my kids have a lot of fun with this latter feature. The set has decent playability, though it really shines if you have other Lego people and things (vehicles, animals, droids, whatever) to expand the storyline. And since the cabin is unfurnished, your kids may want to make their own brick beds, brick tables and brick chairs.
Overall this is a very useful set with a lot of possibilities and a modest price tag. It makes a good gift because if you don't like one design, it is easily changed into something else.
Cheers

Lego Classic Rocky River Retreat 6552 Review

Lego Classic Rocky River Retreat 6552

There isn't much to say about Lego's that haven't already been said. They are terrific toys that are great for children and adults alike, and help with imagination and focus along with following instructions. Though Lego has certainly gotten more corporate as years have gone by - to the point that they repeat certain themes over and over with slight twists - this particular set takes me to a unique time in Lego. Today you're guaranteed that Lego 'City' theme will always have a new Police or Fire station. But what is the 'other' theme? At this time, 1993, you had recreation (2011, you have 'Space' - for ordinary life, not just 'Star Wars').
The Rocky River Retreat is easily one of my favorite sets. There was quite a bit of detail and imagination put into the genesis of it. From the unique base-plate that has a painted river to the drawbridge, you've got outstanding play possibilities. It also had numerous artifacts and accessories from a horse to a a 'bird of pray' (a parrot painted gray), mugs, a skillet, suitcase and and numerous trees with unique trunks. The brown color schemes too added a bit of extra flavor, and the roof plates to the cottage were also a nice touch. The set also comes with a nifty 'SUV' with overhead lights, a fishing pole and trailer with boat. It is so creative that you also have a water pump/well!
This set is 20 years old, so make no mistake, finding it will be extremely difficult. But I would recommend it if it could be found. So many of Lego's older sets seemed more original and versatile to me in that you could do even more with them than just make the display. It just goes to show you that Lego was and always will be one of the more creative building toys on the market. It really was a golden era for Lego products and around the same time, the more girl oriented Paradisa series came out. Also around that time they were really exploring more 'recreational' themes, so you had vacation boats and items of that nature too.
Like so many other classic Lego town sets from the 80's and 90's (like the McDonald's one too), if this were to be re-released today, without question it would sell well.

LEGO Lamborghini Gallardo LP 560-4 Polizia Review

You can buy this set direct from Lego for $59.99 These toy resellers buy up all the sets they think will become rare and hike the price way up. The average kid will never get many of these sets and especially mini figures because of these profiteering grinches. Don't support them. Go directly to Lego.com instead. This set is in stock now.

Lego Creator Set #7804 : Lizard Review

Lego Creator Set #7804 : Lizard
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The Lego Creator series Lizard is a small, bagged set that's used mainly as a giveaway set, though obviously you can buy it separately. It includes enough pieces to assemble a tiny, green lizard with bulging white eyes.
Complexity - The set includes 33 pieces and only took a few minutes to assemble.
Playability - It's a cute little set, but you can't do much with it once it's assembled. I'm pretty sure this one will be stripped for parts the next time we build something green.
As a giveaway, this was a perfectly nice set. It's not something I could see paying more than a couple of bucks for though.

LEGO City Set #7939 Cargo Train Review

LEGO City Set #7939 Cargo Train
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Just so you know, I'm a parent who loved Lego when I was a kid, and then rediscovered it with my kids. We generally like Lego trains and I have not had reason to speak ill of them. But this really IS a special set.
This is Lego's deluxe starter set. The train is nicely crafted and the set has a ton of playability. The engine is a European-style, yellow and gray, electric freight engine. The rolling stock includes a flat car, tank car and container car. The set also has a red full-length container, a yellow half-length container, two small automobiles (that load onto the flat car), green container gantry, a semi with container trailer, and four mini-figures. It includes 8 pieces of straight track, 16 curved, two switches, and 16 pieces of flex track. It also has all the necessary Power Function (PF) accessories (motor, infrared control, and battery box). The battery box is a new part; it holds six AAA batteries and sits inside the engine. If you don't like changing out AAAs, you can opt for the more expensive lithium-ion battery and DC charger available directly from Lego. Also, Lego has designed the engine such that you may add a set of lights (routing the wire under the arched red bricks). The lights (8870) are also available directly from Lego and they connect neatly with all of the PF batteries. That said, there really isn't anything extra that you need to get with this; if you are buying this as a gift for your child or grandchild, the only extras you need to remember are nine AAA batteries.
What do the kids think? Of course, they are all over it. There is a lot you can do with the set. It is a fun build (some kids need help, some don't). The train can go sufficiently fast that it derails. And there is always a mini-figure or two that seems to be walking across the track at inopportune moments. And with the ability to mix our existing Lego sets with this one, the train does not get boring.
For those of you who have earlier Lego train sets, this is a new generation that uses Power Function motors and infrared signaling. The prior "RC" sets (7897 and 7898) use a different motor and different infrared control unit. The prior 9 volt sets used electrified track. This newest generation has the same gauge track as the 9 volt, but the track is plastic (and is exactly the same track as the RC sets).
Sometimes when we get a train set I am tempted to redesign things. I like this one the way it is. The engine could use doors. And it takes a little bit of disassembly to get to the battery box (we did splurge on the rechargeable battery, but we swap it with our other trains too). But the detailing on the engine, rolling stock and cargo is just right.
The set has a deluxe price, but if you have already bought into Lego, then you are well on your way to being able to build a city around the track or create your own train cars. Relative to traditional train sets (e.g. Lionel type) you would have to pay a similar amount or more for something of decent quality.
Finally, and I apologize for my lengthy comments, there are two additional sets that have come out at the same time: a train station (7937) and a level crossing (7936). The latter is an especially nice addition.
Cheers

LEGO City Small Car Review

LEGO City Small Car
Average Reviews:

This is a pretty handy car to have around, but it doesn't have braking lights or an exhaust tip.I bought this at the wal-mart in marshfield when it was only 4.97. but that was when the easter bunny gave me 5$ and 84 cents and then i found some coins that were worth like 1.17 or something and then i saved enough money to buy a 20.oz bottle of soda like coca-cola or mountain dew or something.Overall, this is an awesome car except for the durability.
See you later people that are crazy lego fans.
Ps.I rebuilt this car into a mail car to hold mail.
Pps.this doesn't quite look like a smart car at all.
