This is one of many Best-Lock sets I purchased during the holiday specials. You get double the number of figures compared to an equivalently priced Lego set, and on sale triple the number. For my six year old, this is very important and a plus. The figures are slightly cheaper than Lego minifigs, and the legs sometimes need to be pulled apart when they squish together so they can stick to the blocks. No major issue, but part of the overall cheapness of the set. Four stars for fun, but three for quality.
The buildings are all made of one wide pieces, unlike the usual two wide pieces in a Lego set. This makes the set more difficult to assemble, even though the buildings at this point appear to be equally sturdy once assembled. Occasional blocks fit loosely, but if you carefully choose where you use them, i.e. the middle of a wall, they work fine. Sometimes the pieces are also slightly stiff for young hands to put together. Definitely two stars, one star for a younger child working alone. There is no problem using these pieces with Legos or Mega Bloks.
There are multiple medium size base pieces, more than you get with a Lego set twice the price. It includes an abundance of specialty pieces, such as doors, windows, wheels, even a motorcycle! I would give the set 4 stars in this area, but I had give it three stars overall due to the quality control issues mentioned previously (loose and stiff pieces).
Next is the MAJOR disadvantage of this set for children. The instructions require adult supervision, and the small size (6.5" x 9.5" with two sets of pictures on a page that size) makes it definitely bifocal time. What would be two large pages with Legos or Mega Bloks is combined into one small pamphlet page. The information is all there, but unless the child is very experienced with Legos, or older, or both, trying to assemble the buildings from the included instructions would be impossible. The only reason I would not give it one star is because you can actually assemble the set from the instructions.
If this was a Lego set, at Lego prices, I would give it at most two stars. However, it is less than one third the price of an equivalent Lego set, and that makes it worth the price. My daughter is young enough she needs help either way (reference the instructions), and she definitely wants me there when "WE" are playing Legos. Once it is all together she has a blast with it. The increased size of the assembled set is a huge plus. That is why I give it three stars.
