This will be our 5th Playmobil advent calendar. They all have a cardboard backdrop scene. I know this is a problem with some owners, especially those accustomed to the lasts-for-generations buildings Playmobil is known for. But for $15, you're paying for the wonderful Playmobil figures and accesories, not a building. The cardboard backdrop sets the scene (this year a park) and you add an item each day to the scene. The scene builds progressivly; one day you might have a person and the next you have something for the person to hold. Expect to have Mom or Dad spend about 30 minutes to assemble the flat-folded boxes and fill them with the appropriate toy(s), using the simple to follow illustrations. It needs to be assembled without the kids around; the whole point is that they don't know what's going to be in the next box. For that matter, hide the box the whole thing comes in or those inquiring minds will see the diagrams on the back of the box and will know what will come next. Playmobil makes a new advent calendar every year so you can build your collection. In 2006 they also have a "girly" pink unicorn advent calendar and a "boyish" knight advent calendar. If you aren't familiar with Playmobil, parts can be tiny and can get lost/eaten by small children. Clothes don't typically come off, but hats/hair do. Figures are jointed; heads, arms, legs all move. Great for both boys and girls.
