The axe/sword weapon and the spikes really make it gorgeous as a result of their sheer spikiness and the yellow coloring of the tips of the spikes. Xplode also has plenty of joints and can be posed well. The design is quite durable and won't easily fall apart during play. I worry about the armor on his ankles coming loose, but no worries yet. As a Lego set, Xplode is also very capable. There are plenty of ways to rearrange his armor and rebuild his weapons without any additional parts.
There are, however, some minor problems. There are three burgundy/dark red pieces: his upper arm and his meager chest armor. While they definitely add some tone to the set, they stick out. It would have been better to color those pieces the same red as the rest of the set or make some of the black pieces, like the upper legs or their armor, also dark red. Also, I don't know about anybody else, but I hate launchers and missile-firing weapons with a passion. They're too easy for kids to lose, and they seem to prevent imagination.
Finally, a snobby comment comparing Hero Factory to Bionicle. . . Xplode shows exactly why Hero Factory isn't very good as a theme. This character seems like a throw back to Bionicle, what with its elemental nature and tribal-looking face, but in the context of Hero Factory his design seems kind of silly. Maybe he's supposed to seem barbaric, but he really doesn't fit in with the other characters in my opinion. Couple that with the fact that he has one of the better designs (imho), and you might begin to suspect that Hero Factory doesn't exactly promote cool, varied designs. I hope that Hero Factory moves more into Xplode's direction, maybe using the fact that it isn't bound to one style like Bionicle was to create a great variety of styles among the characters. But for now, Hero Factory is just a bunch of similar-looking robots. And Xplode.
