Toy Story - Buzz Lightyear Electronic Spaceship Review

Toy Story - Buzz Lightyear Electronic Spaceship

My son (he's 5) has a pet-peeve about the Buzz toys that seem not to have Tim Allen's voice (there are some recorded phrases that play on this ship), but that's more a problem with Buzz action figures. Also, one other issue is that the ammo-rocket-thing fires by itself sometimes (with the ship placed on by bedside table last night I got shot in the head, but I live to tell the tale).

LEGO Toy Story Western Train Chase (7597) Review

LEGO Toy Story Western Train Chase (7597)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is a five star train for kids in the 5 to 8 year old range. Older kids may be more interested in the City line trains (7938 and 7939) or the Harry Potter Hogwart's Express train (4841). The City trains, incidentally, are the only ones that come as complete sets with track, motors and remote control devices.
Wow, this is a good looking train! I believe that the photos and box art for the set don't do justice to how it looks when it is built, and how much fun it is to play with. This is an Old West 4-4-0 steam engine, box car, passenger car, and caboose. I would describe the design as more cartoon-like than realistic, with the engine having exaggerated proportions and the cars a tad short. The set includes no track or motor. It is designed as a push train. The engine uses four new drivers (and comes with two extra un-flanged drivers) as well as a cattle-catcher (a new part). The train cars themselves are short but attractively designed. As with the other new trains for 2010, this set is largely brick-built (i.e., few specialized plastic moldings). The set includes Woody, Buzz, Jessie, Bullseye, Rex, and Evil Doctor Pork Chops mini-figures. The passenger car and the caboose are designed with lift-off tops to make it easier to place characters inside, and the box car has a trap door in the roof. The caboose and the passenger car also have doors at each end, but the caboose doors don't open all the way because of the railing. And I find that the engine is not as sturdy as I would like (e.g., the piston cylinders can pivot out of the proper orientation, the cattle catcher comes off when the kids hit objects -- as they are wont to do). The train is not a difficult build, but younger children will likely need some assistance.
Regarding adding a motor, it is possible to use Lego's Power Function (PF) accessories to add one. The easiest way is power the drivers with a motor, place an IR receiver in the engine cab, and a battery in the box car. The problem with this method is that the drivers are large and so even at slow motor speeds, the train goes faster than it should. It is preferable, but more of a hastle, to build a tender and put both the motor and battery box in it. This engine deserves a tender, and a tender's wheels are a more appropriate size for the motor. Wheels, coupling magnets and bricks can be had, piece-by-piece, directly from Lego. Obviously, motorization is really a project for tinkerers, but isn't that what Lego is about? In any case, the major parts that you need are (usually directly from Lego): 88002 (motor), 8884 (IR receiver), 8879 (IR transmitter), and one of the following:
-8878 (rechargeable battery) with 8887 (transformer for recharging)
-88000 (AAA battery box).
Though train buffs will likely be put-off by the design, this set is going to be very, very popular among children. Grandparents, I think this makes a perfect birthday or holiday gift. I do recommend buying track; the engine's wheels are on two bogies, so the whole thing can get a little sideways without it. As of early 2011, Lego discontinued their standard track pack, #7896. Two such sets gave you an oval. 7896 is still available but often at outrageous prices. In place of 7896, Lego currently offers a flex-track pack (#8867, which is enough to make a circle) and a combination straight and flex pack (#7499). I don't believe the flex track is ideal for curves, but it is not clear what Lego's plan is at the moment. There are also switches available (set #7895). If you want to add additional old west structures, you can add 7594, Woody's Roundup (which is a scene in Toy Story 2, not 3).

LEGO DUPLO Toy Story Pizza Planet Truck 5658 Review

LEGO DUPLO Toy Story Pizza Planet Truck 5658
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Our kids have actually never seen the any of the Toy Story movies, so the movie tie-in part was irrelevant to our purchase of this toy. What my kids *do* like is astronauts and monsters, and to them Buzz Lightyear is a 'Space Man' and the alien is a monster. Acting in these roles, these characters have been a big hit, and a very fun addition to their Duplo & Playmobil 123 collections, which are often played with in tandem.
Aside from the cute figures, you get about a half dozen red & green Duplo blocks, a white round sign with a dinosaur logo and a topper for the car with a rocket pizza logo. And, of course, the car itself which is a fine, durable vehicle, with wheels thatroll smoothly and freely on carpeting and hardwood. The van capable of seating a single character in the cab, and with an optional covered back. This can be removed, leaving a flat-bed truck-like vehicle with an area which can be built on. My daughters seem to like their cars built up like skyscrapers. There is also a four peg space under the car where it could presumably be set atop a structure when building. Ya never know when you might want a vehicle on top of the chimney of your house, right?
The only drawback is the price, and the fact that some pieces are made in China as well as the usual European countries. But aside from that I'm very pleased with this addition to our Duplo collection - and so are the kids.

LEGO Toy Story Construct a Buzz (7592) Review

LEGO Toy Story Construct a Buzz (7592)

We LOVE Legos! I have been waiting for the Toy Story Legos to come out for a while. We were very excited when we first saw them. I purchased this for my grandson and we had a great time building it, but it is really fragile. Buzz's helmet won't stay on and he is top heavy so he keeps bending over backwards and the waste. This frustrated my grandson. I would suggest buying it, but just to build and display.

LEGO brand Toy Story Woody and Buzz Rescue (7590) Review

LEGO brand Toy Story Woody and Buzz Rescue (7590)
Average Reviews:

I bought this set and put it together in about fifteen minutes with my daughter. We were very excited when we got the set, because it comes with both a Woody and a Buzz mini figure, as well as the RC Car. After putting it together, the RC car was surprisingly fast, and also incredibly fragile. The slightest mishandling will cause the car to fall apart. Buzz's visor suffers from the same problem. The RC car is also kind of small.
Overall, this is a neat set, though it seems like it should have been a little cheaper. You are basically paying twenty dollars for two mini figures, since the car is going to fall apart so often, you'll probably just leave it alone. This set is recommended to fans of Toy Story, especially since it is the only way to get both Woody and Buzz in one set.

Toy Story 3 Alien Rescue Claw Game Review

Toy Story 3 Alien Rescue Claw Game
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The other reviewer explains the game very well, so I'll stick to the reasons I decided to return the game. My son received this game for his birthday and we set it up to play.
There are four claws to pick up the little colored toys. You are supposed to pick up the toys that correspond to the color claw you are using as they rotate around the board. Your claw has no real control, basically you peck at the toys and try to fling them to the middle. Two adults had trouble managing the claw and actually getting the pieces into the center. The pieces were just as likely to be flung off the game all together.
The game, when assembled, does not fit back into the box, so you have to take it apart and assemble it every time you play. Each claw snaps into the center piece and then snaps out. I didn't like the way it felt to unsnap the piece, I think if done repeatedly the piece would likely break. I also don't think most children could managed this task.
This game takes 3 AA batteries which are not included.

Toy Story Action Links Junkyard Escape Review

Toy Story Action Links Junkyard Escape
Average Reviews:

The toy does what it says, a little hard to set up and get the hang of, but it does work, kinda boring after a while, I suppose you could switch up the order and see if it works. It was larger than what I thought and pretty durable, no really small parts so my 3 year old can play too, a little hard for my 6 year old to set up on his own, the crane will not stay up and is hard to set. The rest is easy. Ok price, not sure if I will buy more Action Link sets or not yet. We will see how much he plays with it.

LEGO Toy Story Buzz's Star Command Ship (7593) Review

LEGO Toy Story Buzz's Star Command Ship (7593)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
A must have for any Lego fan, especially a Toy Story fan as well. My 7 year old and I had a great time putting this together. One of the biggest hits of Christmas. We bought all the Toy Story Lego kits except Woody's Round Up. Everyone knows how much fun Lego sets are, sadly they are very, very expensive. Our only complaint about this set, is Buzz's helmet does NOT stay on. There are tiny pegs on the helmet, but where if fits into the suit piece, the holes are almost non-existent. It's very frustrating having the helmet falling off, it really will not stay on. I still give this 5 stars, and all the other sets we bought too. We've had a great time with them.
