LEGO Ninjago Training Outpost 2516 Review

LEGO Ninjago Training Outpost 2516
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Lego seems to be going all-out with their new Ninjago line. In addition to an array of new sets, they've come up with a Pokemon/Bakugan-style game and a storyline that's all but begging for a Saturday morning cartoon. I picked up the small Ninja Training Outpost set to see how my son liked the new series. It's essentially a black-suited ninja minifigure (his name is Cole apparently) and a bunch of training gear and weapons.
Complexity: The set has 45 pieces, and they're almost all weapons. You have to construct a sort of display stand and a target for archery practice, but it's fairly simple. I think we spent 10 minutes at most putting it together.
Playability: It's a ninja with a bunch of weapons; so yeah, this one is getting played with a lot! I have no doubt that we'll eventually lose a dagger or two, but this little set has a lot of play value for the money.
I don't know how deep into this Ninjago line my son is going to go, but the Ninja Training Outpost definitely makes for an enjoyable (and affordable) introduction.

LEGO Ninjago Trading Card Holder Review

LEGO Ninjago Trading Card Holder
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This product retails for $9.99 in the Lego store. It is basically a cloth-like wallet, which has a pocket on the left side to hold your Ninjago card collection. The right side has a velcro-pocket to put your Ninjago weapons. It's not really big enough to fit a whole character plus their spinner. Overall, the size is just larger than one of the cards.
It also comes with Kai's 3-D character card. The card is ok, it says it has motion effects, but they're kind of hard to see. The graphic is like he's doing his tornado spin, so there's not a lot of contrast. This is the only way to currently get this card, though.
If your child needs something more than a ziploc to keep all their Ninjago stuff from getting lost, this is a good choice, but don't overpay for it as it's not worth it.

My four year old chose several Ninjago spinners for his birthday. He's younger than the suggested age but loves these toys. This box helps him keep his little weapons, spinners and figures in place. Much better than a plain box. Its a nice travel box as well. The battle spaces work just ok. They don't spin as well as a hard surface but works on the go.

My son is 8 years old and has many of the other lego sets, including star wars. He loves this set and built it entirely by himself. He is sure this is his favorite of all sets. It has many spinning parts which make it interactive and also has a ninja guy with a spinning base, which makes the action very fun! I highly recommend this.

LEGO Ninjago Kai 2111 Review

LEGO Ninjago Kai 2111
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
My son saved his money and chose this ninja to play against his friends. Apparently at recess, all the boys have moved away from Beyblades and onto these Lego-themed battling tops.
Kai is the red ninja of fire. If you don't have the LEGO Ninjago Spinjitzu Starter Set 2257, you may want to consider it or the LEGO Ninjago Spinjitzu 3D Battle Arena. The 3D arena is probably better purchased through the Lego store, where I believe the in-store price is $15, though online it is listed at $20. Without one of these, it's hard to keep the tops in a confined area or without falling off a table.
*The Spinner*
The spinner is a custom Lego piece which cannot be disassembled even though it looks like it's two pieces. You cannot make a spinner like this from other Lego parts. It is heavier than standard Lego pieces - I think they added some weights in it to give a longer spin. The ninja's head covering comes off, revealing Kai's battle-scarred face which looks cool to kids. The headcovering also allows you to snap a weapon onto Kai's back, so he can hold all three weapons at once.
One thing I didn't realize about the spinners until we had them is that by rotating the grey piece where Kai's legs go, it raises/lowers him.
*The Cards*
The cards you get in a given package are always the same, so don't worry about buying multiples of the same item just to try and get different cards. You actually get 5 cards (1 Character card & 4 Battle cards):
Card #1: Kai's Character card - this one show's you Kai's powers and abilities
Card #21:Power Up - lets you hold an extra weapon
Card #74:Higher Ground (Gold Card)- lets you build the two 2x1 blocks on the bottom of the spinner to make yours higher. As a "gold" card, you have to be holding a golden weapon to use this card
Card #24:Wall of Fire - You build a stand using the included Lego bricks and place this card in it within the arena. If your opponent knocks it down, they automatically lose.
Card #38:Shaky Bones - Your opponent has to stand his character on only one leg.
Another note about the cards is that in order to use a card, you compare the element power required to use it against the powers listed on your character card. For instance, "Power Up" requires 3 Fire (red) blocks, whereas "Shaky Bones" requires 3 Blue (Lightning) blocks. Therefore, not all players can use all cards, however, Lego has ensured that within a package, your character can use all the cards he comes with. Additionally, each set comes with different cards, so while you won't get duplicates of the same card by buying different sets, the only way to get all the cards is to buy all the characters and the starter set.
*Playability*
The game is perfectly fun without using the cards or playing by the rules, but for kids who want an extra challenge, it's a nice addition. Also note that there's no use for the cards outside of the Spinjitsu game, other than just collecting them for fun. There's currently 40 cards, but they are numbered between 1 and 80. I guess Lego left themselves some room for bringing out more cards.
Overall, a good set, and though a bit pricey, I think the extra is going to the custom spinners created for the game.
*Pairing with other sets & characters*
If you already have the starter set and want characters of different elements, then Kai and Krazi are not the right choice, as they feature the same elements (Fire & Lightning).
The best "Bad Guy" to buy along with Kai is LEGO Ninjago Krazi 2116 because Kai can also use every battle card Krazi comes with. Unfortunately, Krazi cannot use the Higher Ground card that Kai comes with, though that's the only exception. Additionally, if you have the starter set, by purchasing both Kai and Krazi, you'll then have both the Ninjas and Skeletons of Fire & Lightning.

LEGO Ninjago Sword 853105 Review

LEGO Ninjago Sword 853105
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
We purchased 2 of these Lego Ninjago Swords w/Sheaths for $14.99 each (yes, that is the full retail price) at the Lego Store in the mall this past weekend. The sword is ok. On the blade is a picture of a dragon with an emerald jewel eye breathing fire. The sword itself is not very sturdy (and I don't see it lasting long). It is made of a very thin backmounted foam material (the picture of the dragon is glued to both sides of the exposed thin black foam). It wouldn't take much effort/pressure to bend it in half (i.e., break it) because it does not "spring back" into shape. If the sword were made of a thicker, more flexible foam (more nerf-like) that would be ideal. The fabric sheath, however, is really cool-looking. It really screams "NINJA" and makes the outfit. My boys have dueled everyday with these swords without hurting one another. They especially like the sheath because they can store their swords on their backs when they aren't "fighting." The SWORD gets 1-2 stars and the SHEATH gets 4-5 stars and the SET an overall 3-4 stars simply because my boys love playing with it.
If you are looking for an inexpensive, slightly better quality sword, we also bought the How To Train Your Dragon Movie Hiccup Dragon Foam Sword a little over a month ago at Wal-Mart on sale for $6. It is a good foam sword that will last if you do not have a child who is inclined to "rip it" to see what's underneath. My younger son figured out that there was something under the foam and decided to (with some effort) rip the foam off and find out exactly what. Mystery solved ... it's clear hard plastic (which now makes the sword a little more dangerous). With the foam ... the How To Train Your Dragon Movie Hiccup Dragon Foam Sword is a great little sword. As I said, the foam did not just rip off on its own. He REALLY worked to get it off (as I later learned from my older son).

This is a cool set which retails for $30.
Pros:
*It helps you build your skills in controlling your spinner
*Comes with Jay DX (Jay with his special dragon suit body).
*You get a lot of skeletons which can make a good army for the ninjas to fight against.Cons:
*Skeletons don't have real heads - they're blank
*Other than bowling, not a whole lot to do with it
*Some sellers on Amazon are double-posting this item and charging more than retail (which is fine if you can't get it any other way, but it should be readily available as of this review)

Lego Ninjago 2172 Nya Review

Lego Ninjago 2172 Nya
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Nya is Cole's brother in the Ninjago series. In this set, you can actually use her to play the Spinjitsu game. The only other set she's currently in is the LEGO Ninjago Garmadon's Dark Fortress 2505. In this set, she has a two-sided head, one with a regular face, and the other with the bandana running across her mouth.
I do have to mention price - Nya and her spinner is being released in spring of 2011. The retail price is $9.99, so take that into account when you buy.
I like this set because it opens up the Ninjago theme to girls who would also want to play. It's also nice to be able to get the minifigure without having to buy the most expensive set in the series.

This was a lot of fun for my 7 year old to put together. I liked that there were clear divisions in the assembly instructions (and the pieces came in 5 sequential bags), but Ben did it all in one sitting. Then we played with it while watching Ninjago video clips on the website, Ninjago.com. He's always been big on Legos, but he particularly likes this set and storyline.
I give it 4 stars for "educational" because following assembly instructions is an important life skill.

LEGO Pharaohs Quest Mummy Battle Pack Serpent Warrior Mummy X2, Flying Mummy Golden Sarcophagus Review

LEGO Pharaohs Quest Mummy Battle Pack Serpent Warrior Mummy X2, Flying Mummy Golden Sarcophagus
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Great addition to the Pharaoh's Quest theme...the Skeleton Mummy Battlepack is a must get for your Egyptian 'army of the undead' Moc's, excellent for Pharoah Quest Mod's and overall collector's of unique mini-figs.
Here's the breakdown of what ya' get...
- 1 Flying Mummy mini-fig. Same figure you see from Flying Mummy Attack with beautifully painted, single winged piece and dark blue Horus headed helmet with 'wedjat' graphics. No weapon though.
- 1 Mummy Warrior mini-fig (similar to fig. from Cursed Cobra Statue) w/Pharaoh-like dark tan head-dress adorned with dark blue snake graphics and all new dark, pearl gray sickle sword.
- 1 Mummy Warrior mini-fig (similar to fig. from Cursed Cobra Statue) w/Pharoah-like dark tan head dress adorned with dark blue snake graphics, black spear and all new, nicely designed Scarab-shield.
- 1 Pharaoh Sarcofagus (similar mold to the Adventurer's Egyptian sarcofagi), pearl gold top/lid and dark blue base/coffin. Inside you'll find 1 red snake, 6 gems (trans colored red, 2 turqoise, yellow, blue and green), and 2 trans red studs.
- 2 Black Scorpians.
Note: All 3 mini-figs have same graphics for head(Dueled faced-2 red eyes and teeth on one side, other side one red eye peeking through the wraps), torso (mummy wrap graphics with detailed necklace front and back) and legs (graphics on front only).
Overall, for $15.00, this is a great 'battlepack'. Since now we know that the magnet sets are mostly glued (and those went for $15.00 anyways) this is an excellent value since you get more for similar price. I'm hoping they'll have more Pharaoh's Quest Battle Packs with Anubis Warrior figs. and accessories.
Great for the MOC'ers and MOD'ers out there. This is the type of set that spurs your imagination. Just from this simple set you can Moc an entire fantasy scene around this.
I highly recommend it.
(PS...as of this review (12/28/10), the cost on Amazon says $29.99. You can get this at your local LEGO store or LEGO dot com for $15.00)
