LEGO Minifigure Collection Series 4 : Hockey Player - LOOSE Review

LEGO Minifigure Collection Series 4 : Hockey Player - LOOSE
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
A new season is here, and that can mean only one thing - new Lego minifigures! OK, I'm sure other stuff happens in the spring, but my son and I have been crazy about these little Lego figures, so we're pretty excited about what series 4 has to offer, like this Hockey Player.
The Hockey Player has a lot of gear, including pads, a helmet with face shield, ice skates, a hockey stick, and even a puck. It comes with the basic figure stand too, but with the skates on he's not able to stand on it. Chalk up another very well done sports-themed minifigure for Lego. Before too long they're going to have to give us a stadium set to hold all these guys.

LEGO Community Builders Set (9302) Review

LEGO Community Builders Set (9302)

This is a fantastic beginning lego set. Tons of bricks, several mini-figs, trees, doors, windows, wheels, and just a good assortment. A little pricey, but compared to a lot of other sets, I think this is a good deal for the price. I would recommend adding a large base plate for building, but other than that, this is a great set.

If you want to get this, go to lego.com! Its $23 on their site, compared to $45 on amazon. I called amazon to see if they price match and was told they do not. So, save yourself some $$ and you can buy more for less! (review created 11-29-10).

LEGO Project Case Red Includes Base Plate Review

LEGO Project Case Red Includes Base Plate
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Let me start off by saying honey, do *not* buy these online for $25 plus shipping. It's a plastic box. I found these exact same Lego boxes at Walmart for $9, base plate included. The boxes themselves are Iris brand and are available at most craft stores for $5. This one's cute, though, since it's a pretty color and has the Lego guy's head on it.
To get on with the actual review - the box itself is fantastic. It's a nice wide size so you can fit a base plate and a whole mess of Legos in it, the top is hinged and clips in front and is secure but still easy enough for a kid to use. My son is seven and has no problem latching and unlatching this box. It's not particularly deep so tall creations in progress may not fit - Iris makes other deeper boxes that work great for this purpose. This hinged box fits inside of the deeper boxes, which is awesome for keeping things consolidated.
I can't really go on much more about it because it is just a plastic box, but it's durable and easy to use and it helps keep my childrens' Legos from being permanently scattered all over the floor. It's a good size for them, too, with a built-in handle for carrying. Get yourself one or three!

LEGO Star Wars Set #8099 Midi-Scale Imperial Star Destroyer Review

LEGO Star Wars Set #8099 Midi-Scale Imperial Star Destroyer
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Back in high school I had the Revell plastic-and-glue model Star Destroyer, and my friends and I spent a LOT of time drawing it, flying it around my room, and zooming it slowly over our heads to replicate the opening shot of A New Hope. So the lines and details of the Imperial Star Destroyer are engraved on my brain. This midi-scale Lego model is pretty darned accurate. It has a lot of nice little touches, like both ventral hangar bays and big areas of raised surface detail that echo those on the movie ships. The back end looks particularly cool, with the three big engines and four smaller engines between them. They are even correctly recessed with hull plates sticking out beyond them above and below.
The "display stand" is basically a kick stand that snaps onto the bottom between the main hangar bay and the dome over the reactor. It is small and unobtrusive but lets the model sit horizontal when it is parked, without leaning or tipping. You can easily snap it off for play and then put it back on for display, which is a nice touch.
The design isn't perfect. The main hull consists of four big triangular sections that snap onto a hidden chassis at an angle to create the classic Star Destroyer lines. There is minimal space between the four sections, but if you look at the front end of the ship from _exactly_ above, below, or from either side, you can see a narrow strip of light where the four sections approach each other but don't quite merge. Also, where the smooth top and bottom sections come together at the sides, the rough, detailed area between them is somewhat thicker than it would be in a perfectly scaled model. But these are very small nits to pick and they don't really detract from the finished model, unless you are an stickler for absolute perfection (in which case, the Ultimate Collectors Series Star Destroyer can still be had, for vastly more money).
The completed model is about 9" long and about half that wide and tall. It is DENSE. Most Lego sets are at least somewhat airy when built, to accommodate mini-figures and so on, but this one is mostly bricks all the way through. It feels reassuringly solid in your hand, and it is easy to pick up and play with without feeling like you're going to break it, which isn't always the case with the bigger Lego Star Wars vehicles. My little boy dropped mine once when he was carrying it one-handed, but the repair job only took a couple of minutes.
Although the Midi-Scale Star Destroyer looks good just sitting on the shelf, it practically cries out to be picked up and zoomed around the room. About five minutes after I finished building it, I was flying it over my head making laser blast sounds and talking like Darth Vader. Any toy that can make me feel that much like a kid again has earned its five stars. Highly recommended.

LEGO City Set #7848 Toys R Us Truck Review

LEGO City Set #7848 Toys R Us Truck

I had purchased the Toys R Us lego set a week ago & it took about 5 days for it to ship & come. This is one of a special edition that does not sell on lego's website or at any Toys R Us stores anymore, so I was happy to get this for $50. Even though I'm not sure if it was the owner's part or the UPS part for sort of ruining the lego box, I wasn't too happy to see the box in a non-mint condition (I keep all my lego boxes in mint condition). But overall, everything was alright.

LEGO Minifigure Collection Series 3 LOOSE Mini Figure Baseball Player Review

LEGO Minifigure Collection Series 3 LOOSE Mini Figure Baseball Player
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Hooray, the Series 3 Lego mystery minifigures are here! Yeah, by now I'm more excited about these things than my son is. We have 16 new figures to collect, including this Baseball Player.
The Baseball Player has a great detailed uniform design (the team is called The Clutchers) complete with cap and his accessory is (obviously) a baseball bat. No glove though, which would have been cool. It also includes the basic figure stand that they all come with.
This is a really neat figure. It would be great if they eventually made a player in a different uniform, as I could see someone creating a baseball field diorama with a dozen or so of these guys.

LEGO Hero Mark Surge 7169 Review

LEGO Hero Mark Surge 7169
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I went out of town last week and I always try to pick something up for my sons when I travel. I decided on toys this time. I came across this Lego Bionical Hero and figured it would be welcome. And yes it was, they love them. I got this blue one named Surge and a red one named Furno
My two youngest sons built them in no time. My 7 year old had to lend some assistance to my 5 year old son on a few of the building steps, but they were assembled pretty quickly. They played with them for the rest of the day and then they hung their Heros on their beds when they went to sleep that night. They have had these toys for 4 days so far and they have played with them every day since they got them.
ps: I love these toys too. Mainly because it is a Lego set that a 5 and 7 year old can build by themselves. So I do not have to sit on the floor for hours building Legos. Which can be fun, but seriously, hours on the floor? Not me.

LEGO Star Wars Magnets Set #4585396 Han Solo, Paploo, Scout Trooper Review

LEGO Star Wars Magnets Set #4585396 Han Solo, Paploo, Scout Trooper
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
These little magnet sets are a great way to build a minifigure collection (the figures detach from the magnetic bases) without breaking the bank on expensive larger sets, especially if you can pick them up on sale. My son saved his allowance for a few weeks and was able to score this set at half the original retail price.
This set includes Han Solo (in Endor gear but minus the trenchcoat), Paploo the Ewok, and a Biker Scout (or Scout Trooper). All three figures - yes, even the Ewok - look pretty cool, and they all have accessories. Solo and the Scout come with blasters, and Paploo has a spear. The Biker Scout was by far my son's favorite, since he already had a Speeder Bike from the LEGO Star Wars Snow Trooper Army Pack (8084) waiting for him.
These figures are all available in larger sets, but if you're on a budget this magnet set is definitely the way to go. I'd recommend going with Lego directly though, since they're the ones who have reduced the price of this particular set.

LEGO Atlantis Wreck Raider (8057) Review

LEGO Atlantis Wreck Raider (8057)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This set at less than ten bucks is well worth it for the 2 minifigures alone: Sharkman and a Deep-Sea Diver. The Sharkman has a full shark head (not just a "shark hat" for a regular Lego guy). The Diver has a unique helmet/tank combination that is not found outside the Atlantis sets. The underwater vehicle is designed with multi-pivot engines in the back and 2 shooting pistons in the front. This set is small enough for a child to put together in about 5-10 minutes according to their level of experience with Lego, and it's handy to tote around and play with easily. Great value for the fun!

My five-year-old son put this together, with me just looking over his shoulder and pointing out details in the instructions when he missed something. It's a delight in every way. It has a launcher that works elegantly with just rubberbands. There's lots of opportunity for imaginative play. It was a marvelous learning experience and achievement for him. The instructions were crystal clear and every piece was accounted for. It looks totally 'cool' , but not cheap or flashy, and it's plenty sturdy,I can't say enough to adequately praise this item!

LEGO Creator Log Cabin 5766 Review

LEGO Creator Log Cabin 5766
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Lego's Creator line is one of my favorite because the sets avoid the use of really specialized pieces and, instead, focus on the creative use of more basic pieces. This is much closer to the way Lego sets were when I grew up. You can, of course, buy the bulk Lego sets, but I find those boxes provide too many 2x4 bricks and not enough of the one-stud wide bricks and other key elements (like angled roof pieces). Creator sets like this one provide a great mix of very useful pieces, often in colors that are hard to find. And because these come with directions for multiple builds, they encourage rebuilding and experimentation.
This year's first Creator house is a tidy little log cabin (there is another house, #5771 Hillside House, arriving later in the year, as well as a lighthouse island, #5770). This one is on the small side and it is not built on a baseplate but on a number of small plates (this represents a bit of shrinkage compared to years past). But it has a great color scheme, especially the dark roof tiles, and it has plenty of windows. There is a fireplace, one mini-figure, an ingenious kayak, a tree, and a fire pit with a spit. The top lifts off and the back side (of the A-model) opens up like a giant door; my kids have a lot of fun with this latter feature. The set has decent playability, though it really shines if you have other Lego people and things (vehicles, animals, droids, whatever) to expand the storyline. And since the cabin is unfurnished, your kids may want to make their own brick beds, brick tables and brick chairs.
Overall this is a very useful set with a lot of possibilities and a modest price tag. It makes a good gift because if you don't like one design, it is easily changed into something else.
Cheers
