Star Wars Episode 1 Electronic Naboo Royal Starship Blockade Cruiser Playset Review

Star Wars Episode 1 Electronic Naboo Royal Starship Blockade Cruiser Playset
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is an excellent playset/vehicle recreation of the Star Wars ship. A few drawbacks you should be aware of. 1)The landing gear is popped on and off every time it "flies" anywhere, rather than being stored on the ship a la The original Millenium Falcon. 2)The top won't close all the way when figures sit in the cockpit seats.3)The various battle damage panels and landing ramp tend to fall off in flight as they are not connected at all. 4)It is HUGE! There is just no weildy place to display this, Star Wars fans. It's ONE YARD LONG! 5)It's kind of thin flimsy plastic due to it's size. I thought I would break it every time I picked it up. On the other hand, the sound effects are killer, and the IR battle droid fighter action is the coolest idea Hasbro has come up with yet. You hit the ship with an Infra red blast 3 times and the panels (and little red droid) blow off and sirens wail. Way cool! Amazon's price tag is the best offer anywhere, even with shipping, you save off what you'd pay at Target or Walmart. So get crackin' and pick one up! Little Anikin is waiting on Tatooine!

1/48 WWII Russian Infantry & Tank Set Review

1/48 WWII Russian Infantry and Tank Set
Average Reviews:

The item's picture and description misrepresent the product. It's not a "WWII Russian Infantry & Tank Set", as promised in the item's title, it's just the kit, containing of pieces of soldiers and no tank at all. Nowhere in the description it said that it doesn't include the tank and that the Infantry is a "do-it-yourself" model kit. My son was very dissapointed and upset!

Collect and Build Robo Battlers Series - Slasher Review

Collect and Build Robo Battlers Series - Slasher
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
My son got this for his 8th birthday and was excited about it. The age grade says 7+ and this seems generous as the sparse directions and finicky assembly would drive 10 year old batty. First, the instructions. Each step is illustrated in a 3/4 drawing with a bare minimum of clues as to how to build it. The view is always the same, never a nice detailed shot rotated to best illustrate the step -which is critical with the nature of the K'nex pieces and their unique attachments.
My son got frustrated at Step 1 and after I asked him to try again, I sat down and worked on the kit with him. I don't mind building the kits together, in fact I like it a lot, the issue I have is that I'm guessing the chances of him building anything else with the kit, like he would with a Lego kit, is small. Speaking of small, these pieces are smaller than the other K'nex set he has (I think it was a Happy meal toy).
The saving grace for the set is that it has a few parts that can accommodate Lego pieces, this combined with the Lego block I super glued to the battery housing should extend the life of the toy, keeping it out of the bottom of the toy box for now. Right now the robot is walking past with 8 Lego Star Wars Mini Figs attached to it :)

Collect & Build Scooter, #1 of 4 in the Micro-Bots Series - motorized for exciting mechanical movement! This set comes with 123 K'NEX parts, primarily micro rods & connectors to build a motorized robot. And just as his name suggests, Scooter moves by scooting along! And that's not all - Scooter combines with Hopper to build an even bigger motorized robot! Recommended for builders ages 7+. Requires 2 "AA" batteries, not included.

I bought this Lego Bionicle for my 8 yr old son and wasn't sure if he was going to like putting all the pieces together, but he loved it. He really had a great time putting it together and did really good w/ reading the instructions...his dad helped w/ some of it. The only downside is that there's a little handle that kept breaking off, but other then that, it has stood up pretty good.

Playmobil Blackbeard's Pirate Ship Review

Playmobil Blackbeard's Pirate Ship
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I thought my mom was crazy when our six year old son opened her Christmas present to him last year - a very elaborate pirate ship fully stocked with all kinds of tiny accessories and detailed pieces. I mean, little pirate men complete with separate swords, hats, pistols, lanterns, treasure map...plastic bits of the sort that will get lost in the carpet or swallowed at the bottom of the pit we call a toy box; gee, a parent's dream come true.
So I spent over an hour the next day assembling the ship. It may not take everybody that long, but I wanted the little stickers to line up perfectly and all that. Everything went together beautifully to form a handsome, well-crafted ship with just the right amount of detailing. Sensible and durable plastic makes up most of it, except for the string that winds up and ties to the anchor. Still, this was not the babyish stuff that he was used to playing with before, but a real treasure of the kind that invites kids to use their imaginations and really play.
A few months had it sitting on its own shelf in the closet, and then suddenly one day our kid seemed to take notice of his pirate ship. It has become the hands down favorite toy ever since, played with every day, with friends or alone. It has inspired a new interest in pirates and pirating history, to the tune of a few discovery books on the subject and planning our next birthday party around a pirate theme. We have even added pirates and cannons to the set so that they could have better adventure possibilities.
Sure, a few of the tiny things have been lost along the way. Mostly though, I think this has taught our son to take better account and care of his things. A strict rule of all pirate pieces gathered and put away on the pirate ship every night before bed has helped a great deal to keep them off the carpet and out of the toy pit.
Playmobil is fabulous. I foresee birthdays and Christmases with more of the pirate collection and even the playmobil Treasure Island as gifts. Blackbeard's pirate ship is a proven winner in our family and I would recommend it to any parent as a quality toy (and one that has bought me many peaceful hours of good kids playing time, besides!).

LEGO Creator: Robo Platoon Review

LEGO Creator: Robo Platoon
Average Reviews:

This set has provided my kindergarten son hours of fun. (The set says age 6+, but my son is five and has no problem with the small pieces.) He builds the robots, takes them appart, and builds others. The instructions are clear, even for a little guy just learning to read. There are many different models to build, starting easy and working up to more complex. There are also "ideas", pictures of models without instructions to challenge my son after he's done all the others. Most son loses interest in most toys after a few days. But, he's had this set now for several months, and he still enjoys building with it. Best ten bucks I've ever spent for a toy!

The only good thing about this set is the fact that its the only set where you can get the alien Frenzy. The set just isn't that good, although you can't tell on the box the set has ALOT of holes and doesn't look very good. I recommend spending $10 more and getting Space Truck Getaway.

LEGO Star Wars ARC-170 Starfighter (8088) Review

LEGO Star Wars ARC-170 Starfighter (8088)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
As always, Amazon delivered the product in 2 days with Prime membership.
The LEGO 8088 Arc-170 is a remodeled and updated version of the original starfighter from set 7259 (now discontinued). This current model has a much longer wingspan and is overall bigger, with smaller pieces resulting in a more intricate design and tighter fit. The color palette is also very nice, however, the set does come with stickers, which I have chosen not to apply. Bear in mind that the three cockpit windows are technically blank, and the white window separation is achieved through stickers.
In the core of the Arc-170 is an exceptionally clever LEGO brick engine, composed of 2 interior gears; turning it lowers/raises the wings, reminiscent of the X-Wing. I personally feel the price tag for this set is a bit on the high side in terms of bricks:price ratio, but the well engineered engine mechanic is no doubt the cause of this.
When purchasing this set, one is essentially paying a premium for the additional labor cost used for design. Of the more recent Star Wars sets, this is the only one to incorporate Technic pieces on this scale.
Comes with 4 minifigs [2 clone pilots, the Jedi (whose head is made of rubber), and 1 astrodroid].
Conclusion: There are much better LEGO Star Wars models out there if you're looking for a good bricks:minifigs:price ratio. However, if you're interested in a more technical set that "moves" with not just wheels and kinetic energy, this is for you.

My 8 year old son had been wanting this kit for quite some time. When he got it for two straight nights he sat in the floor and worked on it until it was complete. The kit is for ages 8-12, which at first I thought it would be too difficult for him to work. He only needed help with one small section of the kit. The cars when built really look realistic, unlike the "typical" lego cars. They almost are like Hot Wheels. I highly recommend this kit for any Lego enthusiast.

LEGO Star Wars Republic Attack Shuttle Review

LEGO Star Wars Republic Attack Shuttle
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I got this as "The Big One" for my 6 year old son's Christmas.
I was a bit concerned he was a bit below the age bracket, but he had good success with some of the smaller sets so I figured he had worked up to it. Neither of us were disappointed with the purchase or imagined it would take that long to build.
Overview
This was the first major Lego set (600+ pieces) I've built since I was a kid in the 80's. Things have changed quite a bit. The best way to think of this set is not a collection of bricks to let your imagination run wild with. It is a model that has some rebuilding potential, can be played with and is more easily repaired when it breaks.
Packing - Perhaps my biggest gripe about the set is the way it's packed. All the parts are in several bags grouped by some unknown criteria. Steps required different parts from different bags. The worst part is that parts of the figures are spread among different bags (why??) so life got more interesting when my son rips apart all the bags looking for Mace Windu parts. End all the parts go dumped into the box in one big slurry.
Instructions - Perhaps my biggest complement is that these were by far the best instructions I've ever seen with a Lego set. They were two 40+ page books. No way you'd build it without them. The best thing was that at the beginning of each step they listed the parts to be used in that step. The pacing of the instructions was good so that you didn't miss parts in a step. They were clear enough so that my 6 year old could follow them without too much assistance.
Build - This was a complicated build. There are several sub-assemblies that have to be build and then integrated into the larger unit. You have the main body, the top launcher, the cockpit and the wings. The function of many things is not obvious when you start building it and things can get easily turned around. When building it I would hunt for the parts for the next step in the slurry pool, then my son would do the actual building. He needed a bit of help with the steps surrounding the long and short rods that had to be threaded through other parts (often requiring higher finger strength) but aside from that it was kid friendly enough for him to complete 95%+ of the building. Its not something I would turn a younger kid loose on without help though. The total build time on this project was about 8 hours. Amazingly enough it kept him focused that he worked on it for 6 hours straight one day and 2 hours the next.
Durability - It's a Lego and not really a "toy". It's not meant for heavy duty play. He's had quite a few battles with it and it's stayed more or less intact. There were some predictable problems with the wings coming off (highest load) and other large flat areas that see a lot of pressure. It seems to be holding up as well as I could hope given its size and complexity. It seems to be durable enough that when you carry it and use the "features" it doesn't break too often, to me that's kind of the minimum standard.
Features - Lots of cool stuff.
The front cockpit opens in a clamshell fashion, seats 2 figures. The entire cockpit is easy to snap on/off for emergency ejections and the effects of accurate gunfire.
The top of the ship has a missile rack with a strip fed clip of missiles. There is a push rod in the back that launches them. It relies on the inherent tension of the missiles against the strip to store the energy before they go flying out. Range, about 1-2 feet sitting on the ground. This section occasionally comes off but is easy to put back on.
The back section of the ship is hinged at the back and opens up for the "cargo bay" which can hold several figures. He has a lot of fun with this. The hinge mechanism is pretty good, no disasters yet. There are two flip locks on the front that hold it securely for when it moves around.
It has two bomb bays which drop bombs. 4 bombs total, there is a clip in the bomb bay that holds one of the bombs back so when you open it not all the bombs fall out. There is a knob on the back that works the bomb bays. The bomb bay covers (which rotate up and down) are an area of relative weakness that occasionally need patching.
The wings move up and down, each has about 120 degree's of rotation. Their rotation limit comes from a locking pin which is easy to get in the wrong place but can be corrected. The wings tend to break off at the root from time to time but are easily put back on. Considering taking some other pieces and reinforcing them.
Fun
My son has had a lot of fun with this, probably more fun than all the other gifts he got. The styling is cool, the colors nice and it meshes well with his other Star Wars sets. He seems to enjoy launching the missiles and opening the back and messing around in there. There is a hole in the bottom (for the missile clip for flow through) that offers all sorts of imaginative possibilities. It was well worth the price.
Parts
At least 80% of the parts in this set are specialized, meaning you won't find comparable parts in general sets (maybe other spaceship sets). If you loose a part your going to be in a world of hurt. This made me rather nervous as we neared the end and the part slurry pool was kind of thin. But the parts were all there and we had success. If this set ever gets broken down and mixed with your general part pool you can pretty much forget about reconstructing it, way too many parts that are very small. It would take hours to try and find all the parts, many of which will have naturally escaped into unknown places around the house. On the flip side there are a lot of really cool parts here to incorporate into other space ship projects. If I had half those parts when I was a kid some super cool creations would have been mine..
So to Recap
Pro's -
Excellent Instruction
Good Styling
Good features
Cons
Complicated
Specialized and small parts that are disorganized.
Conclusion
If your kid has the focus and aptitude to build a complex model (or you have the focus and aptitude to build it with them) this is an excellent kit. Lots of playability features with acceptable (not great) durability. A good buy and lots of fun.

I love ZOOB toys for so many reasons. My sons play quietly for long periods of time, happily being creative and building the most amazing things. We give sets as gifts as often as possible and I am always surprised at how many people are not familiar with the line. The pieces (there are 5 different shapes which are different colors so that one can keep them straight) connect 20 diiferent ways and give you endless possibilities for building fun. It also allows you to make moveable creations (unlike many other building sets). The pieces are very durable. My 180 lb husband has stepped on a few and they survived without a crack. Last Year Santa brought a large ZOOB set and during the year my son remarked on how he wished there were wheels so he could design vehicles. Then we found this set- perfect! It does not disappoint:)
