(More customer reviews)Ehhh..closer to 3.5 stars. My son is in the throes of a major Star Wars: The Clone Wars addiction and this is somewhere around the sixth lightsaber in our house. That said, I am something of a lightsaber expert. Compared to others, this one is just average in features and a bit pricey..shop around and keep a few of things in mind:
1) This is NOT a "force action" lightsaber. In other words, it does not spring open with the touch of a button but rather must be opened with a flick of the wrist. OK for some kids, but smaller ones might have a hard time opening it fully.
2) The extra, smaller lightsaber works the same way. It detaches as advertised, but is somewhat balky to get re-attached. Also, it doesn't make any sound.
3) The sound of the big lightsaber is pretty realistic, but as one reviewer already noted it is not that bright compared to other electronic lightsabers..it also doesn't seem as loud. The small "blade" isn't very bright either. And all together this model uses more batteries than most.
4) If your kids are like mine, they will beat the living daylights out of anything and everything with these things..each other, trees, furniture, me, etc. The other electronic lightsabers my son and his cousin have used don't stand up very well to repeated whacks and ultimately lose either the sound or the light. That said, however, the plastic "blades" tend to hold up pretty well. It has been my experience that the manual versions like this one tend to have fewer problems opening and closing (long term) than the spring-open, "force action" variety.

Medical Play Set Review

(More customer reviews)After reading every review on every child's medical play set, I chose this one. It is not as great as I'd hoped, but I knew that none of them had every feature that I wanted and I was looking in a certain price range. Some of the pieces are fairly standard - the thermometer, the "hammer" thing, the name badge, etc. The stethoscope fits well enough (a concern for many) and it makes fake sounds of coughing alternating with heart beating (I'd rather a "real" one, but I thought it was more important for it to fit in my son's ears.) The blood pressure cuff/gauge is terrible! The cuff is hard plastic (cuff bracelet style) and barely fits my wrist, it's only a matter of time before it snaps in half. The gauge doesn't work because the tube is horribly kinked, it might even have a hole and is likely unable to be fixed. The syringe doesn't stay together as the rubber seal around the plunger is a bit too small. I haven't figured out how to get it all to fit in the case either. BUT my son doesn't care about any of this! He loves it. I have had numerous "shots" today and he has determined there is no peanut butter and jelly in my ears...prognosis is good!

Playmobil Police Christmas Advent Calendar Review

(More customer reviews)We bought this Police Advent Calendar last night when shopping for a Playmobil Police Motorcyclist, and this entire set was fifty cents more!!! Excellent value for the price, that I would recommend to anyone, looking for an advent calendar, or just as a play set anytime of the year. It says "Playmobil Police Christmas" but be warned that there is absolutely nothing seasonal about this set, unlike "Christmas in the Park" or "Christmas in the Forest", so there is no educational value about the season.
However, it is a fully rounded playset that has enough characters and details to keep your child engaged for hours or years.
It says on the back of the box, which some may not notice, that about 25 minutes adult assembly is required before giving to the child. Many tiny pieces are split up among various plastic bags and picture instructions must be followed to assemble both the toys and the calendar itself. I am an adult who loves assembling kinderegg toys so I don't mind, but some might. The calendar itself is a large box, the actual size of the packaging. Dividers are folded to create cubbyholes inside the main box, and one places the toys as per the images, closes the box front with enclosed tapes. Each day the child can open a numbered door to reveal a different toy or toys. Usually there is one large item or multiple tiny ones. The calendar box is incredibly sturdy and we will keep it for storage.
There is also a background, which is folded and put together via tabs and slots (which unfortunately do not necessarily stay together: this could be improved) to form a city scape with roads, sidewalks, 3D tree, opening 2nd floor window (for the robbery), and 3D jail with opening door. The cardboard of this is unfortunately flimsier than the box packaging, but still works well.
Interestingly, the items are revealed in an order that suggests a narrative: the robber first, then his trade tools, a case with gold coins, then a foot police, his police dog, his radio and gun, another police, a getaway bicycle, a police motorcycle, road blocking items, and finally at the end, jail furnishings! Large and small items alternate. Items included: 3 characters, bicycle, motorcycle, grapplinghook and rope, crowbar, keys, briefcase, chest and gold coins, 2 radios, 2 guns, billyclub street lamp with wanted poster, police hats, flashlight, woolen hat, motorcycle helmet, police dog and leash, cat, 3 rats, crow, garbage can with wheels, road barriers, traffic cones, handcuffs, jail cot, jail toilet and sink, toothbrush and toothpaste, cup and plate (and probably other small items I forgot)... enough to play with for hours. All very solid classic Playmobil.
My four year old loves it, and I think we'll make this a tradition: next year using it for an advent calendar instead of as a gift we opened all at once. Highly recommended, both for quality, play value and price. BTW we got this on sale after Dec 1.

Foam Sword Review

After many discussions of not poking your sister, don't cut the couch, and stop making the dog walk the plank, we decided to stop allowing butter knives as play things. We searched all over the place and found that you had to spend $[...]+ for indestructable swords from fantasy roll play websites. After reading the reviews on this sword we resigned ourselves to having to fix broken swords. Indeed they are not very tough, but the fix is easy. When the sword breaks (and i mean when not 'if')seperate it at a convenient joint and you will find a hollow plastic tube inside. Simply take the broken sword to your favorite hardware store and purchase a wooden dowel that fits snugly inside the tube. You will most likely have to cut the wooden dowel as it will be too long. Glue the dowel inside the tube sliding the two parts together and glue the foam joint back to gether and you now have a truely industructable sword. Our son has been playing with the same on after the fix and absolutely can not break it. I highly recommend this sword with the "fix" as the caviot.

Star Wars General Grievous Blaster Review

(More customer reviews)No young Star Wars fan can effectively re-live scenes from the Star Wars movies without a blaster! My son already had 5 lightsabers, but could never pretend to be General Grievous, Han Solo, or a storm trooper. and then of course, when I played Padme or Leia, I needed a gun. Now that he has the blaster, he's the happiest little Jedi ever. So far, it seems pretty sturdy. It lights up and sounds realistic too. Cool toy!

Little Forest Friends Counting Game Review

(More customer reviews)This game is really sweet, and a lot of fun with preschoolers. My two year old has giggly fun counting the number of steps during play for each person. Each play card in the basic set has a number and countable forest things like flowers, snails, ladybugs, etc. Additional card sets and more complex rules can be used to make the game more challenging for older children... addition and subtraction sets. The game pieces include the cute Little Forest Friends in four different colors, small snail and flower cards to add complexity on the board, and 3 duplo bricks in each of the four colors (2-4 players). Really cute and very fun to play such a game with a child just learning how to take turns and count!
I have to say, that it is a really a shame when such cute, simple and fun toys with educational value ends up being so difficult to find. When the price gets way too high, such toys become unobtainable for the very kids that could get so much joy out of playing with them with 'grownups'. I got this game for less than $10 on Ebay just a few months ago, and I hope that Lego can make this game again and make it more widely available, at a price point that makes it accessible to more kids.

Playmobil Pet Clinic Review

(More customer reviews)When my daughter first chose this set a few months back, I was skeptical. It didn't seem like the most open-ended Playmobil set out there, and besides I was hoping she'd choose the RV, which I kind of wanted to play with myself. Anyway, not my toy, so we brought this one home.
The building structure in this set is identical to the take-along house, which is a bit more expensive. And while the lithographs on the wall are different, it actually double quite nicely as a house, or a (fancy) pirate's lair or really any other kind of place you could want it to be. Once you fill the rooms with stuff you don't really notice the clinic theme on the walls.
As for the items that come with it, it's a nice arrangment that can actually serve as doctor's office as well as an animal clinic.
For the animal clinic, there are four little cages, maybe a dozen animals (dogs, cats, rabbits, and the guinea pigs - which are just way too cute and have their own little hutch). The examining table, medical devices, bandages (which fit the people too) are versatile items, as are the ultrasound device, surgical equipment, office equipment, and waiting room components.
I was tempted to dock this item a star for making me create my own (rather unattractive) lithos to apply to the screens of both the ultrasound device and computer. At first I thought my set was missing this crucial component, but a second look at the pictures on the box suggested this was an intentional oversight. Would it have killed them to make an ultrasound image and a computer screen image, and include these with the set?
However, the missing lithographs aside, this set has far more possibilities that I would have initially credited it with. It makes really good use of the random sets we've picked up along the way, as well as being a perfect playset in its own right.
For those concerned with product origin, this Playmobil set is made in Germany, not made in China.

It has a rubber and plastic handle. The handle has a switch, the settings are demo which is just a demo of what it can do, off which does not allow you to hear any sound, and play which has a motion sensor, just press the button, and it makes a whip sound, plays music, and when you hold the button down, you crack the whip and it makes the sound for you! (More customer reviews)I bought this set for my 19-month-old daughter who really enjoys stacking regular duplo blocks as high as she can. Even though my 3- and 4-year-old boys have their own more masculine, if you will, legos, when this set arrived, all three of them had a blast with it.
It obviously has appeal to the dollhouse-loving yet construction-oriented children out there, and my favorite feature of the set is the presence of several wall, column and roof pieces that lend themselves to building houses/tunnels/garages quite quickly (before a sibling demolishes them).

(More customer reviews)This is not a double-bladed light saber like the one that Darth Maul used in Star Wars: The Phantom Menace. Instead, there is a normal-sized light saber and a mini light saber that can be attached end-end. The mini light saber can either be stored (hidden) inside the handle of the bigger one or inserted in the end of the handle with the blade extended to form a second blade. The normal-sized light saber is not as nice as the other ones we have: it only retracts about two-thirds of the way, not all the way; the blade does not extend at the push of a button, but has to be manually extended. The light effects are just as good though and the sound effects are actually a little better. The mini light-saber lights up but does not make any sound. The light tends to go out when it is inserted in the handle of the larger one to form a double-blade, I think because the button rubs up against the inside of the handle of the larger one. My son seems happy with it, despite it being different from the one Darth Maul used.
