LEGO Mindstorms NXT 2.0 (8547) Review

(More customer reviews)I first encountered the MINDSTORMS series in 2001 when I bought the Robotics Invention System 1.5 out of curiosity. Since then, I've purchased and used numerous MINDSTORMS sets, written two MINDSTORMS books, developed and taught a LEGO robotics course, and given LEGO presentations. So when I heard that LEGO was releasing the NXT 2.0 set in summer/fall 2009, I was curious to discover how LEGO would improve its flagship product. After finally getting my hands on a 2.0 set, I've been busy building, programming, and analyzing the kit's features. And I think this is the best MINDSTORMS set to date.
The original NXT set released in 2006 (I'll call it the "1.0 set") enjoyed enormous success but still had some shortcomings. The NXT 2.0 set addresses some of those flaws and really is everything the 1.0 set should have been. As a robotics kit, the NXT 2.0 set mainly involves building and programming, so I'll take a look at how the kit performs in each of these areas.
First, the building experience is fun and challenging while offering some exciting new additions. For the electronic elements, the NXT microcomputer and servo motors remain the same in both design and quantity; however, the selection of sensors has changed. There are now two touch sensors, an ultrasonic (distance) sensor, and the color sensor. The new color sensor boasts three functionalities. It can detect colors (6 basic colors), measure light intensity, and act as a lamp (emitting a red, blue, or green light). Unlike the 1.0 set, there is no light sensor or sound sensor: the new color sensor can function as a light sensor, and LEGO apparently thought that having two touch sensors would be more useful than having one touch sensor and one sound sensor as in the 1.0 set. I agree.
The building elements are, once again, studless LEGO TECHINC pieces rather than traditional bricks. The 1.0 set included a few TECHNIC bricks, but these are gone in the 2.0 set, which focuses entirely on studless construction. Overall, there is still a good selection of beams, pegs, and axles (including a new #9 length axle) as well as the addition of two small rubber bands. Also fun is the special ball shooter equipment along with 12 small, brightly colored balls.
There are only a few gears included, though. Whereas the 1.0 set included a fairly good variety and quantity of gears, the 2.0 set includes only a handful of double bevel gears and a single 12t bevel gear. This is a bit disappointing but also understandable. People like to add lots of gears to their robots to make them look cool, but lots of gears introduce lots of friction. The 2.0 kit's sample robot designs demonstrate how to connect pieces directly to motors rather than using gears to transmit the motion. This works fine and takes a little bit of getting used to, but I would still encourage new LEGO users to expand their collection of gears after purchasing the 2.0 set.
As for the programming, the 2.0 version of the included NXT-G software offers some welcome new features. A remote control, sound editor, image editor, new programming blocks, improved performance, and other features make programming a more enjoyable experience. Performance is noticeably better than in the 1.0 version but can still be sluggish.
The software includes a number of fun challenges spread across four robot designs: Shooterbot, Robogator, Color Sorter, and Alpha Rex. The sample robots are durable and work well, although some of the instructions for using Color Sorter were a bit confusing. The new version of Alpha-Rex is a truly fascinating robot: in addition to being a fun "advanced" model to build, new users can learn a lot from its incredibly compact and elegant design.
The NXT 2.0 set is leading the MINDSTORMS series in the right direction. I like what I see in this set, and I believe LEGO has a winner on its hands. The 2.0 set is more expensive than the 1.0 set--by $30--but I believe the improvements and added functionality justify the extra cost. In sum, the NXT 2.0 set is a great toolset for any robotics enthusiast and a must-have for MINDSTORMS fans.

(More customer reviews)First, let me say that this is a really cool toy! I bought it for my 6 year old son for this year's annual winter present giving orgy. It is great looking and lots of fun to put together. Just the right amount of challenge for a kid his age. It seems to be durable and I expect it will last longer than the average plastic RC car.
The reason I didn't give this thing 5 stars is because it seems under-powered. The wheels are a good size and give it the ability to cruise around on a lot of varied terrain without getting hung up, however, it is limited by the power of the motor. It doesn't really need to be any faster but it definitely needs more torque to get it to go everywhere it looks like it should be able to go.
The reason I said it doesn't go far enough is because the imaginative creating and building aspect we expect from LEGO is somewhat limited. You can take the parts off and move them around a bit but the possibilities for true customization are pretty limited. I was really hoping that it would be able to integrate with traditional or Technics LEGO pieces to really open up the options but unfortunately you're pretty much stuck with the pieces that come in the box. Even offering additional body kits that could be mixed and matched on the chassis would be cool.

The brain of this set is called Micro-Scout, but it is much more limited in functionality than the latest version 'NXT.' Micro-scout only has one light sensor and one motor, while 'NXT' has 3 motors and 4 replaceable sensors.

KLUTZ LEGO CRAZY CONTRAPTIONS BOOK Review

(More customer reviews)I enjoy building Lego with my kids and, frankly, we probably have all of the included parts already (if we were willing to take a few things apart). I was wary of the product because we aren't klutzes when it comes to things mechanical. But this has proved a great rainy-day toy that we can do together. We build a contraption, play with it for a week or two, and then take it apart and build the next one. Not all of the plans are terribly inspired, but it works for us. I should say that we are dealing with little kids (down to 4 years old) and that I'm not sure how well this set would work for older kids. A ten or twelve year old would probably tear through the designs in an hour and then want more parts to build something else. What I like best about the set is that it naturally encourages building and rebuilding different designs rather than one particular thing. So, it's a great toy if this sounds like something you'd enjoy sharing with your kids. Also, you should be able to find this toy on Amazon at below MSRP.

Short Length Flexi-Cables for NXT Sensors and Motors Review

(More customer reviews)These cables are a godsend. If you are making rovers and other small bots, you've noticed that the overall wonderfulness of your design is ruined once you've cabled it. There is only one 8" cable so you are forced to use 15" when it is overkill, and the cables are black, wide and stiff so its hard or impossible to place them neatly: what you usuall get is a mass of tangled cables sticking out everywhere.The Short Length Flex-Cables solve this problem: there are 2 8: cables and 2 4" cables. The 4" cables are handy when your output and input ports are really close together, and it's great to have more 8" cables. The cables are also a light grey and a little bit thinner so they are unobstrusive. They are not stiff and they are pretty flexible. Buy these. You bots will look way way cooler. (I just did a bot that needed a cable longer than 8" so was forced to use a standard 15" one. I am going to buy a set of Flex-Cables in the standard lengths so I never again have to use the stiff, black, fat ones. Also I bought 2 sets of the short ones which is perfect for my designs.)

PF Motor Controller for NXT (PFMate) Review

(More customer reviews)Everyone owning a MINDSTORMS NXT set may have been wondering why you can use only three motors with your NXT brick. With this device you won't have to worry about that anymore. You'll use the PFMate (connected to one of the NXT's sensor ports) to control up to eight Power Functions (PF) motors. It enables your NXT robot to control the infrared receivers of the power functions as if you were remote controlling it with the PF remote.
Note that in order to use this device, you'll need at least one PF receiver with a battery box and a set of PF motors. I got my Power Functions from the LEGO TECHNIC Buildozer (#8527) but other TECHNIC sets may have them too. You can also get each of these parts off the LEGO website.
Once you've got this sensor, you can download a special NXT-G software block from the mindsensors website that you can use in the programming software just like any other block. You can use the block to switch the PF motors on and off at different speeds. Apart from NXT-G, the device is also compatible with other programming languages.
I have owned this device for a while, and I've been using it in several projects, one of which can be seen in the video in this review. I control three basic motors with the NXT itself, and four PF motors also with the NXT, but via the PFMate. At $36.95 this is a good replacement for an extra NXT set which you would otherwise need to control extra motors (assuming you already have some power functions around). Even though not housed in an official LEGO case, the sensor is very solid and works well.

Robonica Roboni - I Programmable Gaming Robot Review

(More customer reviews)EDIT: The price has come down significantly and this still continues to be so much fun in our house that we have just purchased a 2nd one so we can have the robots go after each other than tormenting the poor dogs!
I really didn't know what to expect when I ordered this. However, I liked the idea that it was a way to potentially introduce my son to programming instead of teaching him how to write "Hello World" in PERL.
This is a really cool gadget -- It looks cool so that kids are automatically drawn to it -- particularly since it moves so fast (your pets will be rather wierded out too -- that's worth the entertainment right there).
While it comes with 3 pre-programmed games out of the box so that you can get up and running with Roboni quickly, once you have explored the capabilities, you can reprogram using the software interface on the PC. This teaches kids a lot about how computers work -- that goes much further than having kids simply be "users" but "programmers".
This comes with a price... it is not an intuitive quick-and-easy process to re-program the robot -- just like with real programming you have to have some sort of plan about what you want to do and implement. In addition, you (or whoever is programming the robot) will have to learn about testing and "unintended consequences" associated with re-programming the robot. But if you or your kid is into puzzles, they'll quickly become hooked with tinkering and making the robot do what they want. They learn patience and problem solving.
It is clear that the product was rushed to market trying to capitalize on Christmas and Holiday sales. The online features are not implemented yet (teaching kids about another realistic component of technology -- the concept of "vapor-ware"!). I have had the software crash several times (i'm running on under XP -- I haven't tried running under Vista).
In addition, be prepared to buy stock in the battery companies because this toy EATS batteries -- not only initial upfront number of batteries -- but the battery life you do get is not impressive.
Whether or not this Robot will be a hit in your home will depend on many factors:
1. How tech and programming savvy are you -- you will need to spend a lot of time working with your kid to learn all the ins and outs of the technology. This is not the type of toy you just hand over to your kid and they play with like many computer games.
2. Are you willing to invest in a second robot? Kids have seen "robot wars" on TV and their first impulse "I want to fight someone else".
3. Do you have the type of kid who really enjoys puzzles and wants to know how to make things work? If they are more interested in just "playing" rather than "controlling/understanding" in their games and activities, then they are probably going to get frustrated and bored pretty quickly. In addition, becoming proficient with the remote control will take some time, patience and coordination.
4. Do you mind toys that make noise? Then this will probably get on your nerves after awhile. As another reviewer pointed out -- you can't control the volume setting and the sounds aren't exactly "music to your ears". (however, if you have a relative that has given you a particularly annoying noisy toy and you have vowed revenge -- this may be the perfect "payback" toy!)
5. Do you have the patience and money to keep the batteries stocked and charged? To me, this is one of the biggest downfalls of the Roboni -- eating batteries like candy personally drives me nuts. This toy/gadget already costs a lot of money. Batteries are expensive too and if you are in the middle of doing something, it is frustrating to have to stop to either recharge batteries or because you are 1 short of the number needed to get this thing going again...
Overall, I think this is really cool -- but I have loved programming and robotics from my first class 20 years ago in college. I like to know how things work. But be prepared that it is still a new technology and all the issues that will go along with that. And if this DOES trip your trigger -- be prepared to buy a second one!

LEGO? Creator Monster Dino (4958) Review

(More customer reviews)I purchased this for my son's 6th birthday. Before it arrived, I was a *little* nervous that it was going to be a little too much for him. But his year-or-so of experience with Bionicles gave him the understanding he needed to build all three of the designs in this box. He required only a little guidance or correction to succeed. And the motor and remote control made this kit especially rewarding when he could see what he put together scurry around the room wirelessly.
The only cons that I see, and this would go for all Lego products today, is that they are much more 'constrained' in design than when I was a kid. Back then, one had to use his imagination to plan, build and enjoy. Today, the pieces go together one way and many kids (I assume) stop there. It takes some encouraging to get ours to "think outside the box".

LEGO Technic Power Function Accessory box (8293) Review

The kit transforms the excavator into a real scale functioning excavator (I own real heavy equipment myself), which can actually dig dry sand, sifted loam, and we attached a small jewelry chain to it and it can lift things like Transfomers Bumblebee and some surprisingly heavy objects just like a real excavator does! So dont hesitate to get one of these. The motor is tiny, but is surprisingly powerful and also this kit has a nice quality switch that replicates a real hydraulic lever and also comes with accessory LED lights which snap right on easily and look sano. The Design of the battery box and the excavator is well done, it mounts underneath the tracked undercarriage and it lowers the center of gravity of the excavator, which increases its stability. Expensive, but worth the dough.

Revell Vexplorer Robotics System Review

(More customer reviews)The VEXplorer is a nifty little kit. Nice tires, better motors than VEX, and pre-assembled components. You can argue if the pre-packaged assemblies really allow students to "engineer" the machine; or if they just dumb-down the kit.
Regardless, where the kit is really lacking is the inability to do any programming. Without being able to program, this isn't a robot; it is a remote-controlled car. The kit is overly basic to make it a very effective teaching tool in high-school or middle-school. It may be good for elementary.
According to the folks at VEX, the motors are not interchangeable with the VEX kit (also a problem). The kit does come with some nice design software. However, the license is only good for six-months. Anyhow, so much of this kit is already built; there is very little left to design.
If you want a quickly-built remote control car for your kids, this kit is great! If you want something to use as a real teaching platform; this isn't the robot for you.

WowWee Roboreptile Robotic Reptile Review

(More customer reviews)I picked up a Roboreptile last night (the cats were getting too complacent after all) and it's definitely a big improvement over the earlier Roboraptor (from what I've seen of that one).
I'm not sure how much long term entertainment one can get from one of these, but it's an interesting novelty item. When I was like five years old this would have been just the coolest thing though. Robophiles and younger kids will love them.
The one caveat I wanted to offer is that the Roboreptile does not work so hot on carpeted floors. His main locomotion technique is basically "shuffling" and this tends to fail on a soft surface. On any hard surface though he gets around pretty good.
So three out of five on this one I think.
Oh, and the cats took to him surprisingly well. Doesn't look/smell enough like anything that evolution has programmed them to be afraid of I guess :-)
One more thing: Getting him out of the box was a major pain. Apparently they're concerned about packs of them escaping and running amok devouring Barbies in the stores at night or something, since he's wired, taped, and screwed to the cardboard which is then glued into the outer box, so set aside a good 20-30 minutes for the unpacking process. And a philips screwdriver that's less than 1/4" in diameter and at least 3 inches long to unscrew him (and get the battery doors open).

(More customer reviews)I like Robptix and we have several sets. The problem is that motors from the new sets (LearningCurve) do not last long. We already have several broken motors. Once disassembled, they have the same pattern - cracked gears. Made from cheap plastic and do not last long. Either a design flaw or a design feature to push you into buying new sets. Old motors from the time when it was an MB product last much longer - all we have from 1990s still work. So, if you want a good motor for hours of play, consider getting an old set from e-bay.

LEGO Mindstorms Black NXT Brick Review

(More customer reviews)There is no doubt that the Lego NXT is an amazing product. I can personally attest it since I have two myself! but this particular model is considerably more expensive than the garden variety and should only be considered for purchase if you're in need of a special/different version of an otherwise exact and same product. Apart from the black color, it's in no way different from the less expensive model that you can get on the Lego Education page, not even considering that it only refers to the programable brick itself, without any other parts, cables or whatsoever. I give it three stars because its only difference from the other NXT brick is it's color and price. You can even forget about that 'special' program: the only really special programm is the one you write yourself. Besides, I'm sure you can later get it on the net for free. Amazing product, but buy the cheaper one!

LEGO Designer Sets: Mini Robots Review

Transformers Armada is a great show (and Takara's transforming toys known here as Transformers are excellently made) but other than that, all the robot shows are just about "robot wars" and robots smashing each other up. Except for the Iron Giant, most of the movies with robots are like that also. Think of the great heritage of cartoon robots from Rosie on the Jetsons to Astro Boy to R2D2. They're more human than humans, with the best of human traits. Think of the wonderful tin toy robots from Japan in the '50s and '60s. How fascinating and beautiful they were. ... What's the other great appeal of robots and space toys? Imagination. Great play value for inventing things. I'm against the recent attempt to make toys "realistic"--so that the rockets are all Space Shuttles and "heroes" all drive police cars and tanks of today. How much better to imagine the police cars and tanks of tomorrow! Thanks to Lego for their imaginative toys.
