NEO Shifters Duplicon Review

(More customer reviews)I bought this for my 8 year old son last year for Christmas. I expected it to be just like the Bionicles we have but it is far insuperior. The quality of the plastic is bad, the small "man" that is supposed to sit in the stomach area and roll up into a ball kept falling apart and the head of the main figure did not fit properly.
I have put enough of the Bionicles together that I can basically do it in my sleep at this point. This one figure was very hard to put together, very frustrating and totally not up to the Bionicles my son owns. I will never buy another NEO Shifter!

The second it throws disks and you play a target game with it, or use it to hit other other throwbots in play or what ever you or your child prefer. Great design and color scheme, and it can combine with other throwbots. I had one as child, so I bought this one to reminisce. Great Toy.

(More customer reviews)bought this after the first movie at target, it was cheap and looked better than all the others. id say i got my 11 bucks worth, and he has a killer array of weapons. hes fairly easy to transform, but his back, which holds his arms, pops off when i get rough with him, this makes for a nice battle scene, but not good for a durability rating, his arms don't stay in place for all the Klondike bars in the world, meaning i have to hold them in @#$%^&* place when i play with him. I really like the mechalive, although they called it something else back then, where his treads and head pops up at the same time you pull his chest down, but i had to glue and tighten the gears so the treads would work after not too long, but hes definitely worth it. after seeing the alternate Brawls, i want the deep desert brawl, but id probably be saying the same thing for this guy, Allspark powered up robots was a nice touch on some of them for kids, i can see myself going bananas for these guys ten years ago.

The brain of this set is called Micro-Scout, but it is much more limited in functionality than the latest version 'NXT.' Micro-scout only has one light sensor and one motor, while 'NXT' has 3 motors and 4 replaceable sensors.

Star Wras Attack of the Clones Jango Fett w/Snap On Armor Review

(More customer reviews)When dealing with this figure, I would have to say that there are many pros, but there are a few cons as well. This is not to say that the figure isn't superb (especially considering the quality of the last Star Wars releases that I have to compare them to), but it could have had a few things to give it that extra "O yeah" ness. Also, for some sick reason, a few of my friends consider some of the cons "too much," so I'll list them in case you, too, find this to be too offensive enough to warrant a non-purchase. (although Jango cries inside when you don't buy him)
Pros:
1)Looking at the naked Jango you see inside of a package makes you appreciate all of the little accessories that he comes with. For instance, this version comes with wrist cuffs that can be taken on and off, a chest piece that can be treated the same way, plus an extra weapon (which, in my mind, is a con as well.) to go on top of his two pistols.
2)The sounds the backpack produces, while very basic, are really true to the Star Wars sounds. Blaster fire and Jetpacks have that distinct sound, and are easily recognized when reproduced properly. Sadly, there are but two.
Cons:
1) The pistols are homeless, unlike those of the "Escape" model (which you need to buy).It actually has holster on each leg for those minute weapons, giving the figure than much more. For the extra money to get the sound effects, I would have also liked to had my weapons fit my figure like the other one does.
2) The "big shooting weapon" is always a defect in my book. I really don't need one, and would prefer something else, especially when "shooting" means me pushing the projectile out. Plunging isn't something I like to do in my freetime, and this action always reminds me of it for some reason.
3) The huge jetpack is so bulky that it makes Jango tip over quite often. You can see that it isn't the right size in the pictures, and can tell this in person ever better. Also, the noises are a bit primitive and could have numbered in the thousands! (or at least four), but o well.
That said, I still think the figure is still a wonderful buy. The accessories alone get my vote, and I would have given it five stars if Jango's backpack hadn't thrown him into my floor three times already this morning.
Don't listen to my friends! Jango's therapist says he needs you so much.

Short Length Flexi-Cables for NXT Sensors and Motors Review

(More customer reviews)These cables are a godsend. If you are making rovers and other small bots, you've noticed that the overall wonderfulness of your design is ruined once you've cabled it. There is only one 8" cable so you are forced to use 15" when it is overkill, and the cables are black, wide and stiff so its hard or impossible to place them neatly: what you usuall get is a mass of tangled cables sticking out everywhere.The Short Length Flex-Cables solve this problem: there are 2 8: cables and 2 4" cables. The 4" cables are handy when your output and input ports are really close together, and it's great to have more 8" cables. The cables are also a light grey and a little bit thinner so they are unobstrusive. They are not stiff and they are pretty flexible. Buy these. You bots will look way way cooler. (I just did a bot that needed a cable longer than 8" so was forced to use a standard 15" one. I am going to buy a set of Flex-Cables in the standard lengths so I never again have to use the stiff, black, fat ones. Also I bought 2 sets of the short ones which is perfect for my designs.)

Mega Bloks - Neo Shifters Robot -Scar Dorn -Green-Templar Warrior Review

(More customer reviews)This is a brand new series from Mega-Blocks that hopefully will continue to expand. These construction toys are very cool but just a little unique. My nine year old son has his own way of putting it: "It's what you'd get if a Transformer married a Bionicle, this would be their baby." and the things do look a whole lot like the Bioncle toys. My son has no problem in putting these things together. he's been slapping together Transformers and all kind of Lego kits since he was 4. He did have to really strain to get the arm and leg joints on. they give a definite sanp sound when they lock in. I'm not sure how easy it would be to get them apart. One note: There's a small robot that houses inside the chest of the bigger robot and he is very tiny. when my son went to put the small one together, the little nub part that fits the head to the body snapped right off. I tried to crazy Glue it back on but to no avail. I've written to Mega-Blocks via email and hope that they will send a replacemtn part. Besides that the completed toy seems pretty sturdy to me. It stands with no problem and you can transform it into a big sphere which my son proceeded to roll down the hall like a bowling ball.
There are currently four different ones to collect and my son is looking forward to getting the others. I reccommend this toy, but I'd also reccommend supervising those small parts. (Keep them away from small children.)

LEGO Hero Preston Stormer 7164 Review

(More customer reviews)My daughter got this and absolutely LOVES it. She's had it for 3 days now and has played with it every day. For my daughter this is next to remarkable. It says a lot for this toy. The only thing that I was not really happy with is one of the arms. I think lego went cheap with this part of the toy as they made the arm / hand and it's weapon into one piece (no assembly required). All other bionicle figures that I've seen have had two to three parts that make up the arm / hand assembly, not including a weapon. With any lego product, I expect that my children should be able to put together as much as possible. However my daughter didn't seen to mind. But I will say that she is only 4 1/2 so the arm may of may not matter to an older child. So for playability I would give it 5 stars. But for product design only 4.

Robonica Roboni - I Programmable Gaming Robot Review

(More customer reviews)EDIT: The price has come down significantly and this still continues to be so much fun in our house that we have just purchased a 2nd one so we can have the robots go after each other than tormenting the poor dogs!
I really didn't know what to expect when I ordered this. However, I liked the idea that it was a way to potentially introduce my son to programming instead of teaching him how to write "Hello World" in PERL.
This is a really cool gadget -- It looks cool so that kids are automatically drawn to it -- particularly since it moves so fast (your pets will be rather wierded out too -- that's worth the entertainment right there).
While it comes with 3 pre-programmed games out of the box so that you can get up and running with Roboni quickly, once you have explored the capabilities, you can reprogram using the software interface on the PC. This teaches kids a lot about how computers work -- that goes much further than having kids simply be "users" but "programmers".
This comes with a price... it is not an intuitive quick-and-easy process to re-program the robot -- just like with real programming you have to have some sort of plan about what you want to do and implement. In addition, you (or whoever is programming the robot) will have to learn about testing and "unintended consequences" associated with re-programming the robot. But if you or your kid is into puzzles, they'll quickly become hooked with tinkering and making the robot do what they want. They learn patience and problem solving.
It is clear that the product was rushed to market trying to capitalize on Christmas and Holiday sales. The online features are not implemented yet (teaching kids about another realistic component of technology -- the concept of "vapor-ware"!). I have had the software crash several times (i'm running on under XP -- I haven't tried running under Vista).
In addition, be prepared to buy stock in the battery companies because this toy EATS batteries -- not only initial upfront number of batteries -- but the battery life you do get is not impressive.
Whether or not this Robot will be a hit in your home will depend on many factors:
1. How tech and programming savvy are you -- you will need to spend a lot of time working with your kid to learn all the ins and outs of the technology. This is not the type of toy you just hand over to your kid and they play with like many computer games.
2. Are you willing to invest in a second robot? Kids have seen "robot wars" on TV and their first impulse "I want to fight someone else".
3. Do you have the type of kid who really enjoys puzzles and wants to know how to make things work? If they are more interested in just "playing" rather than "controlling/understanding" in their games and activities, then they are probably going to get frustrated and bored pretty quickly. In addition, becoming proficient with the remote control will take some time, patience and coordination.
4. Do you mind toys that make noise? Then this will probably get on your nerves after awhile. As another reviewer pointed out -- you can't control the volume setting and the sounds aren't exactly "music to your ears". (however, if you have a relative that has given you a particularly annoying noisy toy and you have vowed revenge -- this may be the perfect "payback" toy!)
5. Do you have the patience and money to keep the batteries stocked and charged? To me, this is one of the biggest downfalls of the Roboni -- eating batteries like candy personally drives me nuts. This toy/gadget already costs a lot of money. Batteries are expensive too and if you are in the middle of doing something, it is frustrating to have to stop to either recharge batteries or because you are 1 short of the number needed to get this thing going again...
Overall, I think this is really cool -- but I have loved programming and robotics from my first class 20 years ago in college. I like to know how things work. But be prepared that it is still a new technology and all the issues that will go along with that. And if this DOES trip your trigger -- be prepared to buy a second one!

Revell Vexplorer Robotics System Review

(More customer reviews)The VEXplorer is a nifty little kit. Nice tires, better motors than VEX, and pre-assembled components. You can argue if the pre-packaged assemblies really allow students to "engineer" the machine; or if they just dumb-down the kit.
Regardless, where the kit is really lacking is the inability to do any programming. Without being able to program, this isn't a robot; it is a remote-controlled car. The kit is overly basic to make it a very effective teaching tool in high-school or middle-school. It may be good for elementary.
According to the folks at VEX, the motors are not interchangeable with the VEX kit (also a problem). The kit does come with some nice design software. However, the license is only good for six-months. Anyhow, so much of this kit is already built; there is very little left to design.
If you want a quickly-built remote control car for your kids, this kit is great! If you want something to use as a real teaching platform; this isn't the robot for you.

WowWee Roboreptile Robotic Reptile Review

(More customer reviews)I picked up a Roboreptile last night (the cats were getting too complacent after all) and it's definitely a big improvement over the earlier Roboraptor (from what I've seen of that one).
I'm not sure how much long term entertainment one can get from one of these, but it's an interesting novelty item. When I was like five years old this would have been just the coolest thing though. Robophiles and younger kids will love them.
The one caveat I wanted to offer is that the Roboreptile does not work so hot on carpeted floors. His main locomotion technique is basically "shuffling" and this tends to fail on a soft surface. On any hard surface though he gets around pretty good.
So three out of five on this one I think.
Oh, and the cats took to him surprisingly well. Doesn't look/smell enough like anything that evolution has programmed them to be afraid of I guess :-)
One more thing: Getting him out of the box was a major pain. Apparently they're concerned about packs of them escaping and running amok devouring Barbies in the stores at night or something, since he's wired, taped, and screwed to the cardboard which is then glued into the outer box, so set aside a good 20-30 minutes for the unpacking process. And a philips screwdriver that's less than 1/4" in diameter and at least 3 inches long to unscrew him (and get the battery doors open).

Star Wars R2D2 Interactive Astromech Droid Voice Activated Review

(More customer reviews)We gave our six yr old son R2 for Christmas and it was the big hit of the day! When he unwrapped his gift and saw that it was R2 inside it was one of those priceless moments that you wish you caught on video...it even brought tears to his eyes. Now, I will say that R2 takes some getting used to. You have to say things just right and be pretty close to him when you speak to him or else he doesn't understand and will just go about doing his own thing. He definitely seems to have a mind of his own sometimes, but that is part of the fun, too. When our six yr old gets a bit older I think he will have more fun with R2. I think the recommendation for 8 and up is probably right on due to the fact that it is a bit challenging for kids to operate (can even be challenging for adults!) Even so, R2 is so cute and life like...any Star Wars fan would love it!

LEGO Mindstorms Black NXT Brick Review

I can personally attest it since I have two myself! but this particular model is considerably more expensive than the garden variety and should only be considered for purchase if you're in need of a special/different version of an otherwise exact and same product. Apart from the black color, it's in no way different from the less expensive model that you can get on the Lego Education page, not even considering that it only refers to the programable brick itself, without any other parts, cables or whatsoever. I give it three stars because its only difference from the other NXT brick is it's color and price. You can even forget about that 'special' program: the only really special programm is the one you write yourself. Besides, I'm sure you can later get it on the net for free. Amazing product, but buy the cheaper one!

Star Wars BATTLEPACK JEDI VS SEPERATIST Review

(More customer reviews)First of all, this is not from episode III, the figures are from episodes I and II. The Darth Maul figure can be fun, but sometimes he can't grip his lightsaber the actual way. Maul's saber broke, so I had to super glue it back together. Jango Fett has a magnetic helmet, firing missile, and removable jet pack. Anakin Skywalker's tunic is cloth, the only cloth in all of the figures. Apparently, Anakin's tunic came off and I just let it be off. One other thing about Anakin, his right arm always comes off.
Obi-Wan is great. Nothing is wrong about him except his saber breaking in half. I don't rough play. The Mace Windu figure is very good, EVEN THOUGH HIS METAL COATED SABER BROKE! But I kept the hilt. The backdrop scenery is a picture of where Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon dueled against Darth Maul.
This toy is great. I highly recommend it to any Star Wars fanatic.
