LEGO Creator Log Cabin 5766 Review

LEGO Creator Log Cabin 5766
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Lego's Creator line is one of my favorite because the sets avoid the use of really specialized pieces and, instead, focus on the creative use of more basic pieces. This is much closer to the way Lego sets were when I grew up. You can, of course, buy the bulk Lego sets, but I find those boxes provide too many 2x4 bricks and not enough of the one-stud wide bricks and other key elements (like angled roof pieces). Creator sets like this one provide a great mix of very useful pieces, often in colors that are hard to find. And because these come with directions for multiple builds, they encourage rebuilding and experimentation.
This year's first Creator house is a tidy little log cabin (there is another house, #5771 Hillside House, arriving later in the year, as well as a lighthouse island, #5770). This one is on the small side and it is not built on a baseplate but on a number of small plates (this represents a bit of shrinkage compared to years past). But it has a great color scheme, especially the dark roof tiles, and it has plenty of windows. There is a fireplace, one mini-figure, an ingenious kayak, a tree, and a fire pit with a spit. The top lifts off and the back side (of the A-model) opens up like a giant door; my kids have a lot of fun with this latter feature. The set has decent playability, though it really shines if you have other Lego people and things (vehicles, animals, droids, whatever) to expand the storyline. And since the cabin is unfurnished, your kids may want to make their own brick beds, brick tables and brick chairs.
Overall this is a very useful set with a lot of possibilities and a modest price tag. It makes a good gift because if you don't like one design, it is easily changed into something else.
Cheers

American 55 Piece Contruction Toy Review

My nephew is crazy about airplanes and building toys. This was the perfect combination of the two. We had fun building it together. He's 5 and could follow the instructions on his own but needed help with the stickers. The only drawback is that there is one large sticker that encompasses the whole body of the plane, so you can only fully build it once.

Star Wars Interactive R2D2 Astromech Droid Robot Review

Star Wars Interactive R2D2 Astromech Droid Robot
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Santa brought R2 to my 6 year old son this Christmas. My son takes this robot with him everywhere. I was concerned that he would lose interest after a few days, but he spends the majority of his day playing with R2. The entire family has enjoyed giving him various commands and in addition to the commands listed in the Command Guide, R2 has some advanced commands (sometimes known as Easter Eggs) built in that we found on the HASBRO website. Here they are:
Advanced Command #1 - Follow Me
In Companion Mode, if you say "Follow Me," R2 will turn to find you and then attempt to follow you around. Go slowly though, or R2 will lose you and turn the other direction.
Advanced Command #2 - Come Here
Also in Companion Mode, if you say "Come Here," R2 will attempt to find you and come to you. Since this feature relies on R2's heat sensing technology, kneel down in front of R2. R2 may not come directly to you, but R2 will try and find you.
Advanced Command #3 - Imperial March Song
R2 plays up to 5 songs, but only the Cantina song is expressly mentioned in the Command Guide.
To play the Imperial March, go to Character Mode by asking "Do You Remember." Ask R2 about Darth Vader and Anakin (in any order) and R2 will play the song.
Advanced Command #4 - Sad Cantina Song
Another song that R2 plays is actually a different version of the song he sings if you command him to do the dance program (in game mode). When R2 is in a sad mood, he will play a sad version of the Cantina song. There are many ways to put R2 into a sad mood. The easiest is in 'Do You Remember'. If you ask about Darth Vader, R2 will go into a sad mood. You can tell, because his mood status indicator will be red instead of blue.
Advanced Command #5 - Celebration Song
The Celebration Song is another one of the 5 songs that R2 plays and is not expressly mentioned in the Command Guide.
To play the Celebration song, go to Character Mode by asking "Do You Remember." Ask R2 about Chewbacca, Han Solo, and Luke Skywalker (in any order), and R2 will play the celebration song.
Advanced Command #6 - A "Special Surprise"
The final hidden gem for R2 really takes a little work, as well as really knowing your droid.
First, have R2 turn on his light beam by saying "light beam." With his light beam on, tap R2 three times on the head, and then place him into Game Mode by telling R2 "Game Mode" and then "Dance program." R2 will have a special dance, just for you.
Overall, I am happy with our R2. I hope you find the commands useful for your little droid. :)

Once the loyal companion to Queen Amdala, this roughly 14" utility droid is now programmed to be your devoted helper and friend. Grab his attention by saying "Hey, Artoo!" and he's ready for more than 40 voice commands! Ask him if he remembers his famous friends, like Luke Skywalker, C-3PO or Jabba the Hutt. Each name will stir up a different response depending on Artoo's "feelings" for that character. Just a few of Artoo's amazing attributes include moving along on his own, turning his front beam on and off, and even playing a secret message when you follow the proper voice commands. In "Game" mode, Artoo plays the hide-and-seek game of Light Tag, dances to cantina music, guards your room with his sentry alarm , or even jazzes up your next party with "Spin The Droid." Once you've mastered Artoo's "companion" and "game" modes, move on to "command" mode for plotting real-time maneuvering or programmed courses for the droid to follow! Artoo also boasts a secret cargo compartment and a unique swing-down utility arm that's also a beverage holder! Window box packaging.

Quadrilla Marble Railway, Basic Set Review

Quadrilla Marble Railway, Basic Set
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This toy is one of the best things we've gotten for our kids in a long time. It is made of solid wood pieces which can be fit together in different patterns, allowing marbles to roll down the track and through tunnels. It sounds very simplistic, but this is its charm! Our six year old son played with it for two days straight when he got it for Christmas, and soon his two older sisters were helping think of new ways to configure the marble run. I was impressed because Quadrilla is very sturdy when it's assembled, which avoids the frustrations we sometimes see with racetracks or Lego buildings that fall apart. I give this set five stars in all areas because it teaches physics, develops imagination and fine motor skills, and teaches children that not all fun toys have a joy stick, batteries or flashing lights. We plan to add to our basic Quadrilla set in the future. We already bought extra marbles in various colors to make "teams."

My airplane lego lovers think these are fabulous, the engines and tail falls off all the time (really frustrating to the 3 year old, and mom always looking for them ) but the stickers do a great job holding the body of the plane together. My 5 year old put it together easily on his own. I totally recommend it, my kids love them, we have three different ones.

Hess Monster Truck with Motorcycles Review

Hess Monster Truck with Motorcycles
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
My grandparents have bought my 2.5 year old son the hess truck for the past 3 christmases, so of course this year he got the new Hess Monster Truck. The truck is cool looking, great "chrome" accents, with flames on the hood. It rolls very well and lights up. It's built fairly sturdy and should stand up to quite a bit of play as our other hess trucks have. This one has less parts sticking out or moveable than the last two years, which were the biggest problems - we had some things pop off of those.
My biggest peeve with this truck and previous years and the reason I give this toy only 3 stars is that the switch on the bottom is only able to be set to lights "ON", "OFF" or "Flashing" - no young child is going to shut the lights off after using it, so the batteries wear out almost immediately, since I'm not going to run through infinite batteries for the sake of some lights, the lights are pretty useless. This was the same with the previous hess vehicles - after the batteries ran out the first time, I didn't bother to replace. More ideally, the truck should have a button on top which the child presses to turn on the lights for a set amount of time, then have them automatically turn off.
Also, for the price, the toy is missing at least one small sound effect in my opinion, a button which makes an engine noise would have been nice. For the same price, I can get cars that do much more. My son certainly likes it, but it doesn't hold his attention as much as his other vehicles do.

LEGO Fire Hovercraft Review

LEGO Fire Hovercraft
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Like all Lego models, this set has great color instructions and the pieces for each "step" are bagged separately for easier assembly.
The best part about this model is that it's not as delicate as many of them (Rescue Helicopter, Airport jet, Airport helicopter, Fire station truck, etc). My five year old can actually play (gently) with this one without it falling apart in his hands. Some pieces come off now and then, but no big deal and easily repaired.

This is a pretty cool set. The only thing wrong is that is should be a little taller like in the movie. This set really recreates the tower in the movie. The only thing wrong is the door. It should be like a prison door like in the movie, not a wooden one. Some good things about this is only one of two sets that have buckbeak, one of four sets that have a dementor, and only one of two sets that have Sirus Black. I RECOMEND THAT YOU BUY THIS!!!

LEGO Harry Potter Freeing Dobby (4736) Review

LEGO Harry Potter Freeing Dobby (4736)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Our oldest daughter who is 19, grew up with Harry Potter and used to spend hours building the Harry Potter Lego Sets, (if she'd only have saved them!!) and now it's my youngest daughter's turn. At eleven, this was her first kit. This is an inexpensive smaller set and she had a great time putting it together. We built this little Dobby kit in an hour or two and had a great time. This kit has a lot of cute little details such as Malfoy falling, little flames, and Dobby is totally sweet with his little sock!
The new generation of Harry Potter Legos that are hitting the stores now are fabulous! Have you seen Hogwart Castle? It looks brilliant. This set though, is small and fun with a lot of special detail to make it really cool when it's put together. With winter coming I think these new sets would make rainy days fun and renew the wonder of Harry Potter for the younger kids. I'd like to get all of the new sets and if this Dobby kit is a sampling of what the other sets have in store, I think that it is going to be a fun winter! These Lego sets are really just fun and interesting. The kids have to use follow the instructions and think about what they are doing. I think they are great learning tools that create a few hours of fun too and the result of the finished product gives the kids a feeling of accomplishment because they really do turn out wonderful. If they want to, they can tear them apart and putting them back together again so there is a facet of being able to use them over and over if they'd like.
These kits make following directions and constructing something fun. Harry Potter has always been big in our family and I am so glad Lego has created this new generation of Lego's for the kids to enjoy now. This small Freeing Dobby Lego kit made the afternoon special. I look forward to the other new Harry Potter Lego sets for lots of special afternoons.

Spongebob Squarepants Great Jellyfish Escape Game Review

Spongebob Squarepants Great Jellyfish Escape Game
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
OK, basically this is best only for young kids who are diehard spongebob fanatics. You roll a direction die and cross a board to get to the Krusty Krab while avoiding being stung by the giant jellyfish. The only reason I took the time to write a review is that my 5 yr old and 6 yr old developed a solid understanding of North-South-East-West directionals from the markings on this board and the directional die. The game didn't last very long at our house, a week of heavy play then a few months of occasional play, but they both are aware of compass and can find NW NE etc. on regular maps now.

Since I bought the Harry Potter LEGO kit, one of the sets I got was The Chamber of the Winged Keys. in this scene, Harry and Ron need to catch a winged key to unlock the door. Only then will they be able to pass into the Chess room to play the ultimate battling game. This set includes Harry, Ron, the White King, a broomstick to catch the keys with, five flying keys, a chamber for the keys, and a chamber with nine Chess squares. This set becomes more intresting when you combine it with these sets: #4702 The Final Challenge and #4706 The Forbidden Corridor. I highly recommend this fantastic, high flying set.

I bought this toy at target and I love it!
Pros: cool mini-figures, great design, roter blades fold up like the real thing, comes with strecher.
Cons: roter blades fall off easily if your not careful, after a while the part that connects the two rear landing-gear bends a bit, the winch is tough to wind up.
overall, I would recommend this set greatly!

LEGO SpongeBob SquarePants Chum Bucket Review

LEGO SpongeBob SquarePants Chum Bucket
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
If you buy this toy be prepared to add some additional pieces and make some major changes before you have something munchkins can actually play with - as far as kids loving it, definitely passes that test my 5 and 3 year old can't get enough of it - however, as with many lego sets, keeping it all together in one piece is a serious problem ... it seems like if you so much as touch it the wrong way the chumbucket falls apart - after putting it back together again for the tenth time I finally got a large flat thin "plate" of lego (also called a lego baseplate if you're looking to buy one) to anchor the chumbucket to, 16 by 32 (e.g. 16 by 32 "dots" wide) and got rid of some pieces on the bottom of the chumbucket - this meant changing it's somewhat round shape to a straight "wall" shaped structure, which my kids didn't mind at all but which older kids might find irritating since it will no longer look like the chumbucket from the TV show ... when THAT didn't work and it kept falling apart I built up a small "wall" of 2 by 2 (two "dots" wide on a side) bricks all around the foundation of the chumbucket (except for the doors since they need to open), which seems to be keeping it in place so far... I would also recommend a number of additional small flat 2 by 2 lego pieces to help hold the hand together on top of the chumbucket as well ... to be honest the kids are much more likely to play with the accesories that come with it than the chumbucket building itself - plankton's tank, robotic crabby patty, robot spongebob, robot customer, and hypnosis chamber - however even these accessories fall apart easily... fortunately they are easily fixed (even my 3 year old can slap the gun back on plankton's tank when it falls off, which it does on a routine basis).
Please note that my criticisms apply to pretty much any lego set being built nowadays - all of them tend to fall apart pretty easily and I see no easy way around it. Note as well that (as long as you have the patience to keep slapping the parts back on that fall off until your kids learn how to do it themselves from watching you - that's been my experience anyways) despite this flaw kids tend to have lots of fun with the lego sets anyways - my munchkins were also delighted with the spongebob krusty crab lego set we bought as well as the doc ock train chase, spider man helicopter and batman lego sets we've purchased in the past... the fact that they have so many lego sets and play with them so often should tell you something about how much kids love these sets.

LEGO? Creator Taj Mahal (10189) Review

LEGO? Creator Taj Mahal (10189)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I love this set. It is my first LEGO set and I'm 47 years old! When I was a kid in the 60's I had an Erector Set and loved it. I knew two kids with LEGO. One had a Mother from Germany, and the other had an Airline Pilot for a Father.
I was creating my LeGummies Lego brick shaped Gummi Candy Instructable for Instructables.com and needed some Lego pieces to make the silicone candy mold.
I looked around for a general set of assorted pieces and couldn't find one in a store. I went to Lego.com, saw this set and fell in love. At the time it was still exclusive and could only be purchased from Lego.com so I bought it there.
I'm an architecture fan (I've given historic architecture tours for over 20 years - it's my passion). Since the Taj Mahal is arguably the most beautiful building in the world, I had to have it.
I was concerned the model would not do the building justice. I thought it might look like a cartoon with broadly drawn details. Boy was I wrong. The model is stunning. There are small gorgeous details that can only be seen when you get close.
When standing more than a few feet away, you can see that the proportions are wonderful.
People see a set like this and often think it must be full of custom parts that are only useful, or used in this model. I don't think there are any parts that only work for this model. It seems that these pieces are all stock. When you see them up close you realize they were not designed for this use, but to be something entirely different. As an example most of the beautiful decorative curved details are made of parts from hinges.
When I received the box I was lucky enough to have the next 3 days free. I started building immediately and didn't stop except to eat, sleep and shower. I enjoyed building it so much I did not want to stop. I finished it at the end of the 3rd day. If it were spread out over time in 2 hour spurts, it could be a fun project that would entertain for a couple of weeks.
It is huge, but it is built in modules, so it is easy to move. The base is 6 rectangular blocks that are locked together with pegs. The building sits on the base, but isn't locked to it. It sits perfectly and doesn't move, but the fact that it isn't hooked to the base makes easy to lift off. The building is solidly built. If you want to move it, just lift off the building, disconnect the six base pieces and carry them to another location then easily reconnect them, and set the building back down in the center.
I didn't find any clear separation in the many bags of parts. Some seemed to be bagged up by the module they are used in, but others seemed to be scattered in different bags. I went ahead and sorted all the parts before beginning. It took a few hours, but I was glad I'd done it. With this many pieces, looking for them one at a time would have been frustrating.
When building you start with the base modules. The 4 rectangles that make up the sides are mirror images so you build them at the same time. The front and back centers are different so you build them individually (the front has a staircase inside) Then you build four matching corners, and four door porticos. Those are hooked together with pegs and then you add the roof which ties them all together very solidly.
You build the central dome separately - it's a fun build all by itself, and four smaller domes. Put these 5 domes in place and you are done.
The only area in my apartment that was large enough to hold it, was the top of my refrigerator and there it sits looking beautiful. I enjoy it every day.
There were no missing pieces, and not very many extras so keep track of everything while you build it - a challenge with almost 6,000 pieces.
I used some battery powered led light strings that are meant to go into holiday door wreaths to light the inside. A single light bulb in the center would work just as well. I only turn it on for special occasions. It looks stunning lit up from the inside. (I only wish there was a way to easily get lights into the tops of the minarets without visible wires, or drilling).
If you enjoy a challenging, and long build, and are an architecture fan like me, you will love this set.
It is not scaled to MiniFigs and does not include any.

I love this playset, but this is not Hut. This is a little house not even made out of wood like in the story! It should've at least looked like the hut in the movie. I even have to say that the lego Hagrid's Hut is better. ... But the lego design does look like the hut. ... Insid this a pretty funny looking Hagrid figure. The way the things move inside are nice, like the fire around the cauldron and the hatching Norbert! Well, I guess it's ok, but if only it were designed better. Well it's good enough to connect to Hogwarts playset.

My children love playing with this new passenger plane.
Pros:
The 3181 is smaller and easier to play with than the larger Lego Passenger plane.
This plane is large enough to carry mini-figures while still being small enough to be carried by the younger children.
Cons:
The smaller size does not allow as many mini-figures to be carried nor as much cargo as the larger plane.
Overall, my children give this Lego kit very high ratings, making it a welcome addition alongside the Lego Air Mail plane or Lego City Seaplane.
